It's interesting that some members here are sympathizing with the troll...

And that is incorrect, unless you have some evidence to back up the claim. The news report says that he scoured the internet looking for tribute sites. It says that he posted messages after people's deaths.

It does not say that he was the person who bullied the dead girl while she was alive or that posted the message the day before she killed herself. Given that they traced his messages that he thought were anonymous, it stands to reason that if Duffy had posted the message before she died, it would have been traced back to him.

The way I read it, they've avoided spefically accusing him, much of it is implied... except for that one quote I posted... where he bullied a mother, on mother's day, in a totally sick way.

Also don't forget that they mentioned his police record of bullying... there sure seems to be a fair bit of evidence mentioned in that brief article.

edit: I hope /b/ serve duffy some cyber justice.

If everyone who was a repeatedly provocative dick was sent to jail then our jails would be four to a cell.

It just adds fuel to the propogation of a controlling nanny state that is constantly worried that some one might get their feelings hurt so the judicial system, has to start acting like a bloody primary school play ground dinner lady, giving people sentences for being dicks.

I am not sympathising with the troll but it is an overreaction and it shouldn't be legal to prosecute people for just saying things however nasty, it can lead to a creeping removal of aspects of freedom of speech the government doesn't trust us with.

I think the more trolls are punished, the less trolls we'll see.

If the government ends up prosecuting anyone that posts politcally correct statements, well that's just evolution - you know people can't even smoke in most pubs or clubs anymore, or have street burnout competitions, etc, the minority have been screwing it up for the majority for a long time.

Remember the riots? Of course you do. Everybody was up in arms about it: decline of moral standards in society, kids are not set any boundaries, people are raised to be self-centred, undisciplined little brats etc. So when said rioters appear in court they get meted out some serious punishment in the form of jail time. Another outcry: punishments are too harsh, the courts are overreacting etc.

Hang on. Weren't we just a week before lamenting how a woman had to jump from a first floor window to escape burning to death? Weren't we mourning the tragic deaths of three young men who just wanted to protect their local shop from getting raided? Or are we ready to sink back into passive acceptance of a decline in societal moral standards now it's back to life as usual and our windows and cars are not at immediate risk of vandalism anymore? It's just a bunch of dicks being dicks, no need to overreact...

I'll worry about the plight of political prisoners in Burma, Syria or even Iraq and the not-quite good ol' US of A (Gitmo). I won't worry about some little ned, whose only useful cobtribution to the world is as a carbon binding mechanism, doing all of 9 weeks for being a *****. Live by random wrath, experience random wrath. There's a lesson in there somewhere.

There is of course a more effective way of dealing with this: something that stands an actual chance of making him a better, wiser person and involves no jail time. But as you said: you wouldn't want to waste your time on him. If you are not part of the solution...

Well calling a deceased person on facebook tribute pages is quite different to someone contributing to social upheaval. Its just a bit stupid jailing people or wasting judicial time on other punishments for saying stuff.

What's with this "we can stop people from being verbaly innapropriate dicks" mentality. There has always been dicks and they always will be. what happened to just shaking your head calling the person a dick, report post and he gets banned move on.

IMO it just makes it easier for the government to erode free speech where it suits them

I like that.. yeah you can't really feel sorry for the guy- I mean he gets what he gets for being a fool

if he really got off on this sort of thing, he could have at least learned how to cover his tracks.. he's your average porn box guy who wants to make everybody else miserable

reminds me of when the ria went after those file sharers for hosting music.. they got fined millions :hehe: justice is really jacked up sometimes.. but this guy definitely didn't have clean hands

I can see the point that it could set legal precedence for future cases like this.. that's why we have things like the supreme court to make it final

If you're sympathizing with this person, then yeah, I am convinced you are one or the other. Wether or not you agree with me however, I don't give a flying ****.

yeah agree with you guys.. there has to be something in place at least..

there was that case where a mom pretended to be a boy online and caused a (think 14) girl to hang herself.. there was no law against doing this and she got off scott free

far as I was concerned she might as well have strung the rope up herself..

ah well hate these kinds of topics- least kids are a little more educated since that incident.. hopefully parents have taken that in and had a talk about it

I'd hate to see it go so far the other way too.. I mean I remember back in the quake days- it was pretty bad sometimes.. I don't know how many times I've been called a racial slur after beating a guy in ogl duel :hehe: but I could always separate online from real life

this stuff is nothing new.. just more people have computers now and buttsex is on the prowl

Just because there always have been dicks and always will be, dies not mean they should not be challenged.

The question is what is an effective challenge. Ban him? He can just re-register a different account. Wipe his messages? Too late; the upset has been caused. Call him a dick? I think he knows he is.

Get him to meet the families who he has upset in person? Once you are not anonymously trolling from a distance, but experience real people getting really distressed for real reasons by your actions, it's not so fun anymore. I think he'd pick jail time over that anytime. I think he might actually come out a more contrite, wiser and nicer person.

That should be the response for anyone intentionally spreading bad will, especially for the deceased.

I don't think that's much of a punishment at all, and I seriously doubt any troll would choose even one week of jail time over it
All I think that would happen, is that the troll would either lol or act like a tough guy in front of the victims... unless you're talking about leaving the troll alone with the victims, and letting the victims do whatever they like to the troll for ~5 minutes - now that's what I'd call a real punishment.

But ok, lets say the troll does feel some guilt and remorse when he sees the victims, and even apologizes... big deal, so he feels bad in front of them for a minute or two... 5 minutes later he's free to make himself feel better, by torturing a small animal or trolling under any username he chooses.
