Why? The money you would spend maxing your rig would be a waste. You could get a sandybridge setup for less. What do you intend to do with said build

^Agreed If you really want to improve that rig maybe a better cooling solution and some overclocking on the CPU and RAM. Depending of what you want to do of course as modern gaming looks like a no no.

I'd put it to better use make it a server/NAS/Backup PC and throw some hard drives in it

If you want a good (cheap) performance boost, upgrade the RAM to 4Gb.

Having said that, it all depends on what you want to do with this computer - playing games or just surfing the internet?

You could also upgrade the graphics card, change to Windows 7 x64 Home premium..

As oasked has said how and what you upgrade depends on how you use your computer.

As a general comment an upgrade to the graphics card or adding a SSD would be sensible first steps as they will be compatible with a newer CPU / motherboard. Memory is cheap at the moment so although it would become obsolete when you upgraded the CPU it may be worth investing in another 2-4 GB now.

+1. Also, an idea of your budget would help, and you don't mention your monitor. In any event, if it's for modern gaming, then you should really start with an i5 2500k and work from there.

Seriously, it's a waste getting hardware 3 or 4 generations old, as the high end stuff from then has only been getting more expensive.

Have you looked at the price of memory these days?
DDR2 is sky high... Close to 5 times the cost of DDR3.

In many cases it's cheaper to buy a new board and memory than it is to work with DDR2. Then there is the fact that you are stuck on Sata2, which eliminates half the advantage an SSD would give you.

First thing to do, is get rid of DDR2, you will be pouring money into a bottomless pit with ddr2 and 775. While a Q9550 or so will get you older I5 speeds, you are going to put all of this into a board that is way behind already and ANY upgrade after this will require a board anyhow. Ditch your board before anything else.

My Agility 3 on Sata2 does everything a lot quicker, so no, I would not say it eliminates half the advantage. The only time a SATA3 will out pace a SATA2 is on sequential read and writes - most everyday usage is the 4K Random read/writes.

OT: Like everyone else said, go SB. If your budget supports it - else go with an SSD.

You should ditch your old stuff and just save for a new build, no point putting high end stuff with the rest of your kit.

Start again. Use Ebay to sell the bits you have.
It would be throwing good money after bad.

Yeah, I thought that too until I went Sata3.

I'm not saying an SSD on sata2 is terrible, it's a nice jump over conventional drives, but moving from sata2/ssd to to sata3/ssd, is just as big of a jump, or more.

I'm very tempted to say :

    "Please don't feed the trolls"

But can't decide if its genuine or not.

the most I would be willing to do with this setup is putting more RAM in and then maybe a GTX560, not worth spending money on really.......even though Iam pretty sure hes a troll
