I think I was helping lprob dig some sand out of his underwater home the other day. Unfortunately I got creeped when I reconnected the next day, aside from loosing what I had on me (just shedloads of sand really), I left a private chest in your chest room with stuff I need. I got sent back to spawn and now I cannot find your house Could you sort me out with directions from spawn?

 

I've been offering to share my server wuth people... I can support about 10 people at once, so you're welcome to join I'm a tekkit master...

If you are somehow mistaken but otherwise need directions to my house - from spawn go in the direction of XMs castle, but keep going. You will soon see a path leading up towards the right

I'm excited about the Nether Chest AKA Block Cloud Storage AKA super-fast way to hand off blocks to another player.

 

Yep - we do need to establish rules for stuff left in there a long time though - i.e. if you fill it up with a shitload of crap for someone to pick up two days later, don't expect that person to get it if someone else needs the storage to move things.

 

I'm more excited about trading = unlimited diamond tools.

 

Books...

We could have a logbook to show what whose stuff is. And a date of put-in.

 

Just watched the Yogcast's video of it and it occurs to me that it should be treated just as one would any other chest on our server: lock down player-created ender chests to be accessed only by that player. This would allow for any number of privately-owned ender chests, vast networks of them if you will, but only accessible by a single player rather than everybody, and anybody could have this type of network for themselves. Want to trade stuff with somebody on another part of the world? Use one of the local, unlocked ender chests and dump your garbage in there for them to access at another public chest. Simples! And surely a plugin for this wouldn't be too difficult to implement, and I would be surprised if the plugin we already use for the chests wasn't updated to include this feature.

Solves all the issues, no?

Edit: although on reflection maybe I understood what was being discussed improperly. In the unlocked chests if we are intending for there to be items left for specific people - possibly for days on end - then I could only presume we would need to adopt a trust policy on it: use the public ender chests only as a means to transfer, and not as a free-for-all-so-grab-what-you-want type chest. The issue being that not everybody that plays on the server reads this thread, so it would be difficult to communicate properly. I wonder if XM would be willing to install a mod to allow for a message to come up whenever an ender chest is accessed stating the rules of said ender chest? Or we could just hope that everybody on the server is adult enough to understand a basic concept like "if it ain't yours, don't touch it without asking!"

 

...Or we could figure out how to have 2 versions of the chest:


A public one, where everybody sees it
A private one, where only you can see it.


If you try to view someone else's private chest, you'll only get your stuff.


I do like the idea of "We're initiating a transfer via informing you by the chat; back away from all ender chests."

 

A solution could be to simply put a written book in a public ender chest along with the items, detailing the time/date of the transaction and the intended person. Then the rest of the trading would be based on trust - trust that no one else will take your stuff until the real person can pick it up, and 'logs' in the Book O' Logs that they have picked it up at a certain time/date. Real bureaucracy in Minecraft!
