dont play them as most need you to pay subs and im not into that for gaming purposes. i want a game i can play whenever i want to and how i want, not pay for the pleasure of maybe getting a few hours a week to play on a massive game each month, its such a swizz.
you should be able to buy 'airtime' so it uses minutes/hours to register. anything else is a massive waste of money imho. and tbh, until they make a mmorpg that i have a vague kind of interest in ill keep away from the genre.

Chemo, you'd think that, but you can get a free month of WoW, free two weeks of Eve, Project Entropia is free to play, Anarchy Online is free to play till early 2007. Really, theres plenty of scope for really getting into some MMO's without paying a penny.

In a way, its cheaper then regular games, unless you choose to go for a sub based one over a long period of time, but if you do, chances are you'd do it 'cos the game mattered more then the money to you.

None here. I tried GW (during the free demo) and Project Entropeia, but then I remembered that I really don't like the whole style. I like RPGs, just not MMOs; online action has to be a lot more fast-paced (read: fps) for me. Most of my friends play WoW, or at least did for quite a while.

There's nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of WoW PVP.

    *** WoW! :)

Nothing before has ever held me quite like wow. Its just... Amazing! Lore rich, lovely terrain and barely any loading screens (unless of course your a hardcore pvp er :)). There so much, and yet not too much (I think its guild wars ?! but they have like 30 professions! That variety, but way too much!).

    Anyway, WoW ***!

Proud warcaller of blizzard products since 1994 :)

but surely you have to pay for the game in the beginning?
they dont just let you play for absolutely nothing to start with?

What about the idea of actually loosing something if you die. in eve You have lost the time it took you to get the ship/ mods and some more time/ money for your clone.

You simply dont just res, repair and carry on like u do in wow.

ahh ok, so the game doesnt actually cost you anything to start with then? if that it then thats a far better approach imho, but the subs still put me as if you dont play alot then youre not exactly getting value for money.

Yup, I downloaded project Entropia for free, I downloaded Anarchy online for free, both legally, from their own sites. I downloaded Eve for free, from the site, when I signed up for the trial, and I havn't tried the WoW trial yet, but I presume its a free download for the installer files too, if not, then its not really a very effective trial.

Paying for installer files for an MMO is something that I imagine we're going to see fade out. Its just such a damn rediculous concept, and many devs seem to have noticed that.

I'm really enjoying Anarchy Online now, and I can play for about another 10 months, which will be easily enough to exhaust the games playability, so basicly its a free game \o/

If I do choose to play on afterward though, it'll be about £5 a month, if I sign up for a year, not exactly cheap(£60) but then, if I play it for 40 hours, I've probably got the same value for money as I would if I'd gone out and bought a couple of £30 games, so, really, its not that bad.

The poll so far is intresting, Lineage 2 is actually the second most populated MMO in the world, yet there obviously aren't many players on this forum, and it strikes me that maybe its not so much of a western MMO, maybe one thats played alot more in China or SK, since you barely hear it mentioned in UK or US boards(at least the ones I goto).

I had a friend Pre-order Lineage 2, then completely forgot about the game before it was release when he discovered Eve haha. He played the Lineage 2 beta and wasn't too impressed. I believe like Specofdust said, the game is extremedly popular in Asia.

I forgot to put it in my first post, but a nice little free MMO that I play sometimes is called Maple Story. it's a side scrolling MMO, that is soon to have (or by now does have) a store system in place that lets you purchase items using real money. These stores are different from the actual in-store games that require in game money. As far as I remember the game was faring well in Korea, hell while playing the game, they create zones that cater to players connecting through Internet Cafes haha. Also they made a statement that they would never charge monthly for the game in the west, and so far they have stuck to it. I also played a called Gunz the Duel. I consider it an MMO because you gain experience from each Kill you make on another player, equip your character with weapons ect..and can engage in group oriented combat. However it's a 3rd Person shooter that you play online, and there are no levels to explore. You simply get on, join a lobby and pick a game to jump into and go for it.

    Agreed!

    :D

It's just such a huge game, you can really do absolutely anything you want, no pre set goals. Only those you create for yourself!

oh, and btw those who said WoW pvp, the rush you get is like nothing else.

IMO EVE beats WoW on pvp because you actually have the added AH! I *could* lose my ship in this battle! (whereas in WoW you don't really lose anything if you lose the fight (other than arguably your pride, and a bit of item damage :/) It's just so unpredictable in EVE. also it's not just a case of bigger better ship > small less expensive ship. It's ALL to do with tactics and what both ships are set up for.

Also EVE has won 'best pvp' in some online MMORPG website awards.

(WoW did however win best PVE), and I'd probably agree with that. so if PVE seems more up your street then perhaps WoW is more up your street. Or If you are already into fantasy. However if you are a bit of a sci-fi junkie then nothing beats EVE :p
