    im lost

in cpu-z it picks up the wrong speed as the processor continually adjusts speed according to what it is doing (therfore adjusting power consumption) ie. if you are typing something in word it may be running at aroun 300MHz as that is all that is needed but playing a game it runs at full steam (or 1400MHz in the case of a 1.4)

the rated speed of a P-M is the max speed it will run at, i think the lowest they go is 300MHz, at least that is the lowest i had noticed mine going

You get a more accurate reading if you run CPUZ when the cpu useage is at 100%

This is a Pentium-M running Super PI:

And this is the same Pentium-M when idle:

If you leave CPUZ open while using the laptop you can see the core speed jumping all over the place.

righto, as i have a 10k drive just sitting there waiting to be filled i thought i would do another install of windows, strictly for fiddling around with (i.e. things like superpi)

i was wondering what would be the best OS for it, i have 98, 2000 and xp pro

also in xp pro, for no crap running in the background is it best to turn all services off or are there some that need to stay running. in msconfig what i had been doing is running a selective startup and deselecting System.ini, win.ini, system services and startup items. but are there some services which aid performance?

win2k wont use the p4c to the extent that xp will, so 98 or xp, id go with x to get the ht support.

would HT make a diff in something like superpi? i have run it with it off and on and get no difference, i know there is significant advantages of HT in applications but would benchmarks and general fiddling be diff do you think?

im kind of leaning towards using 98, just because i havent used it for aaaages with the exception of working for some clients with proper crusty pcs from time to time, haha there was one with 64mb ram and they decided to upgrade to win2k and wondered why everything was so slow, im surprised it even bothered booting up at all with that little ram :D

Smokeybox, what vCore are you using, because I know that the 8RDA3+ has issues within CPU-Z where it takes the VDD rather than the vCore.

Also, what cooling do you have, and what's the max FSB you can run 2-2-2-6 or better at? cause you'd be looking at 37/38s with 2-2-2-6 @ 238fsb. Nice clocks, and welcome to the forums! :cooldude:
