OK, as the title says, I'm getting pops and cracks through the audio on one of my PCs - it's not a periodic thing like wifi or bluetooth interference - it is occurring frequently but chaotically.

I usually connect my headphones through the monitor, so the audio can switch between whichever PC I'm using.
    • I swapped to the onboard audio on the PC, without success.
    • I swapped out my headphone cable - no joy
    • I tried different headphones - nope
    • I changed the HD Audio and Nvidia drivers - nada
    • I reset defaults on sound settings in Windows - no change
    • I've disabled HD Audio in the BIOS in case there was some old skool IRC conflict - nope
Some of the above steps were unnecessary, because it isn't happening on the other PC, but I tried anyway.

    What am I missing?

    Snaps? ..... :eyebrow:

Have you tried disconnecting the front panel audio?

Have you tried unplugging all the USB devices one by one? I don’t usually use onboard audio but had a sound bar that would have a similar issue if I was charging something with usb while in use.

Do you have a soundcard or usb DAC you could try?

I thought I had, but now I'm doubting myself...

Yes, probably three or more. Somewhere.

Cheers, chaps, some more stuff to try - my idea generator had ran out of steam last night.

I had a noise interference problem caused by a USB WiFi adapter.

Yeah, but they usually cause interference on a periodic basis - like a signal search once a minute, for example. I don't use wifi on my main rigs so I usually disable it or pull the m.2 module altogether.

Is it worth trying Bluetooth headphones or similar, to bypass both driver/codec/whatever and cables?

I have tried it with my ear buds - no difference. This becoming a real irritation and I'm verging on a complete re-install.

You could try spinning up a linux usb on that system to rule in or out the OS.

    OK, finally fixed it.

I tried a new BIOS version, no joy, so I rolled it back 2 versions and then updated to the latest version. Fixed. No, I have no idea either.

I hadn't touched the BIOS since updating it to F17 prior to installing my 5800X3D back in June and updating to the newer one was no different, and rolling back to the original BIOS changed nothing. So, I went back even further, to the F15 BIOS I had before installing the 5800X3D - idiot move, because the system wouldn't boot be ause it didn't know the 5800X3d and I had to blind flash again to the F17 BIOS. Then I updated to the new 18c BIOS again. Hey presto, no pops and cracks in the audio.

I have abbreviated the process considerably - I've been pissing around with this rig for over a week, including running a fresh windows install from another SSD, and trying out a Linux live distro.

    What the actual fog?
