    Project CryCase

    Finally it begins...

My Centurion 590 arrived on Saturday so it was high time that i finally started my first true mod. Project CryCase is a mod designed to revolve entirely around Crysis. The exterior will be themed around the Korean military side of the game and the interior will be built up with ideas taken from the nanosuit and the aliens in the game.

Here are some of the first pics:

Started carving up the case before i got a good picture :duh:

Modding the first side panels with a window

Sanding, lots and lots of sanding...

Hoping to finish up the rest of the windows on this side this afternoon, so there will hopefully be some more pics soon...

    Side panel update #1

Just a brief update on the progress of the side panel...

    The second window cut out.

And the third. By now i think i had gone though about 20 cutting disks.... there was a haze of cutting wheel dust in the air.

The inside of the case panels are going to be polished to as close to a mirror finish as possible in order to make the inside of the case look brighter than it is (sneaky I know...)

Any tips on polishing something like this in the most effective way would be a massive help :thumb:

Stay tuned for more updates soon...

im liking this side panel design. for polishing i would suggest sanding from 600 grit to 2k grit. then using some buffing compound to shine it up real nice

you should sand it, or you could be lazy and get some of that aerosol chrome finish... either way would have the desired effect. just depends if you have to do all of that sanding by hand...
like the hexagonal pattern there. looking forward to see where it goes.

Mood (or should i say 'Mode') Lighting

Well i thought i should fill you guys in on the next stage of the side panel.....

Sorry about the quality of some of the images, my digital camera should be ready for use again tomorrow, so crisp shots are on the way :thumb:

On the polishing front so far so good, broke out the spin saw and a buffing wheel, and got some pretty reasonable results, got to finish up a few spots before i got onto a finer polishing compound though

A closeup of the edges of the windows

So nowwww, how does all this come back to lighting? Well heres the plan...

As all the windows were cut out using a single template another of the same templates will be used to engrave the honeycomb pattern onto a sheet of clear acrylic. This will then be mounted on the inside of the case panel so that the honeycomb pattern lines up with the edges of the window. And as for the lights? 3 LED strips, each corresponding to a suit function (Red = Strength, White = Armor, Yellow = Speed, UV CCFL's will provide internal lighting and also represent cloak mode) will be mounted on the edges of the acrylic (one on each side). Each set of lights will then be controlled from a controller modelled around the suit mode selector (pictured below) So when one of the sets of lights is on it should light up the engraved honeycomb pattern.

So there it is, hopefully I'll be able to get the engraving done and mount the acrylic by mid-week.

    Feedback would be appreciated :)

    Happy Modding :dremel:

A really cool effect. When I first saw the cuts it reminded me a lot of the honey comb effect used in HAZE.

    Update 9/9/08

Firstly thanks to everyone that's been giving support and help, it means a lot.

Alright then, time for a bit of an update i guess.

So in in the past two days I've managed to get the acrylic cut to size and start engraving it. I also managed to get a physics detention after i was late to class.... after using the schools workshop to do some modding

Cutting the acrylic so there is room for the LED strips. Used the good old scroll saw for the corners.

At this stage i found our how lethally sharp the edges of acrylic are... they leave some nasty slices :waah:

Marking out what area needs to be engraved. Super Dooper Fun :blah:

    The engraving begins!!!!!11!one!11!

    And then ends.....

And a sneak peak as to what the effect is...... :naughty: Remember there is still a protective backing on the other side of the acrylic though

Feed back is always appreciated :)
Again I apologize for the image quality, My digital camera needs new batteries now :miffed: so I've been using my camera phone... nothing too hi-def there...

    Till next time.

    Happy Modding

Damn you have some patience engraving that lol. How are you doing your engraving? Dremel?

Sucks about the detention mate, don't let it cut in on your modding time lol.

Hahaha, Yeah I'm using a dremel with a bit that's meant for steel/aluminum (until i was packing up when i found the plexi-bits :duh:)

Hmmm, yeah detention wasn't too fun, had to clean out the teachers cupboards, not too exciting...

    LED Strips

    Two questions guys:

1: Would it be better off for me to make my own LED strips with individuals LEDS?

2: Where is the best online place to buy LED's? (Must accept Paypal)

Thanks heaps guys, there will be another update tonight.

All imma say is wow, you've only started and all the time you've spent for cutting your own mesh and the side panel is phenomenal. Can't wait to see this progress.
