Glad you like it Dragonite :)

They're SAS backplanes, SAS is dual port but it's also compatible with SATA. Those are the only backplanes I could find at a decent price so I'm gonna use these, using just half the ports.

Ok still feels weird to have dual ports even if you have SAS disks or do SAS disks have a bigger connection on the actual disk or something?

I'll be using SATA drives; leaving the secondary port unused. SAS has 2 ports allowing for path redundancy.

I can help out with half of that  :p
Based on his reply to my post earlier, it would be the 16.25TB of usable space in a RAID 6 with a single hot spare.

Thanks guys :) I'm really dreading the next step which will be shortening the SATA data cables.

I don't currently have a need for 24TB, I'm currently using about 4TB of space.
But I expect my usage needs to grow with time with HD video and RAW pictures.

I'll be running raid 6 with a hotspare for 18TB usable space (less formatted)

    Edit: Thanks Mosquito :)

You're shortening the SATA data cables? Oh man, I can't wait to see this... I've wished for the same thing, but I've always been to chicken to try it myself :wallbash:

Also GreenGadgets had a thread about making short SATA cables (as in, factory-producing them) and would anyone be interested? It's around here somewhere.

I'm really surprised with all the support, surely this wiring style isn't a first, I'm just making it a little longer than usual :)
    Thanks again :cooldude:

As for the raid speeds I'm curious too but I don't need anything special since this will be bottlenecked by the gigabit connection. We won't see those for some time though, I'm off for 10 days and whenever I fire it up the array will probably still take another 4 or 5 days to build :p

I couldn't leave the CPU 8Pin (2x4Pin) as it was :nono:

Now I hope it'll fit in the box, considering the extra cage sits smack in front of that fat cable loom

as usual, click the pictures for high res

Ok so I fixed the above and have completed all the power, fan and i/o sleeving :)
    Here goes ;)

Pretty much all that remains to be done now is to attach the 8 backplane stack to the cage and shrink SATA cables.

As always click the pics for high-res
