Hello, Note: This is my first venture into the world of modding, and all critisizm (sp?) is welcome. Currently in the phase of design, I will be creating a rather large (12 in. x 12 in. x 12 in.) wood cube, that is still somewhat transportable. I have already placed an order from some stuff over at Xoxide (2 80mm fans, 2 80mm fan grills, anodized thumbscrews) and one item over at FrozenCPU (Vandal Bulgin Illuminated Resistant Switch with LED connector). Again, this is my first project, so I am using an old, dusty computer to buid it. Here are some statistics: Intel Pentium II (300 MHz) 128 MB RAM 60 GB total space (10 GB HD + 10 GB HD + 40 GB HD) Windows XP Home (barely) Two 52x CD-ROM Drives Iomega 100 MB Zip Drive 3.5" Floppy Drive 8 MB ATi Rage Pro All In Wonder (Anyone who want to sell me some better parts, mostly new proc., RAM, mobo, I am low on funds, but if they are old and useless to you, I can pay $30 for all of them ) Despite the horrendous specs, I have some goals in this project. Complete my first mod project Make an interesting and attractive case Use as a music server and occasionally a TV tuner I am going out to buy wood tomorrow or Saturday. Anybody have any recommendations?
Good point. Which is why I will implement this into my concept: What do you people think about nice wood corners to implant into the box? I also have come up with the idea of a black stripe with mesh over it where the drive bays will be. I am also going to stain the box (minus the stripe). Sound good? (Oh yes, one more thing, how bout a plexi window at the top that opens up?
My suggestions: - No plexi. Wood and plastic don't mix. - use high quality solid wood. Maybe something exotic? - no lids, ports or drives in sight. Only wood in sight Maybe you should go for something like URL=http://www.research.ibm.com/BurrPuzzles/]BurrPuzzle[/URL]? You could also take a look at Japanese wood joints... Solid wood blocks that interweave each other. Parts could be moving and behave as some kind of lockers for different compponents. Move one and you can use the cd, move the other and the lcd is showing, move the third part and you can see the mobo....
It's only fitting that your handle is "Noah" I suppose Personally, I like a dark exotic wood. Use rounded corners, it always makes the case look nice and well formed. I have no idea what you mean by the strip with mesh though. Try describing it better or using a pic. Definitely NO plexi. Other than that, my recommendation for staining is a charcoal or black stain. I took apart my drumset, sanded it down and restained it...it's now a very nice black (instead of a horrendous green ) Use a lacquer to seal it in, lacquer is very strong and very nice to finish wood with.
Haha didn't think of that. (BTW, my real name is Noah, heh) Here is a new goal: To make the computer (minus the back and the fans if I put them in front) look like a plain box. To do this, I will need some help along the way, but I'm doin' this. Wood, here I come!
Hmm, anyone know how I can make my CD drive look as if it were not there but still usable (aka "stealth" it)? The guide some guy made here doesn't seem very enticing due to how you would open the drive. Anyone have any good ideas for how I would do it in my situation? >>EDIT<< I was thinking of a slot-loading CD drive, but I cannot find one. Any places you guys know?
Found this on *gasp* eBay: Clicked "Buy It Now" and now it's on it's way! It's a Sony CDU571 16x (ack, but livable) IDE CD-ROM Drive that is slot loading! For only $10 + $7 shipping!
Ask ZapWizard about his slot loading DVD that he got for his Media PC. It's nice, cheap, and better than the crap Ebay sells. There are a few other members with the slot loading CD roms too.
It wasnt <20 bucks, but it was ~50. It was a DVD CD/RW Combo, if I'm not mistaken. 50 bucks isn't a big deal for a dvd/burner. Like I said, there are some others with slot loading ROMs, they're likely to pop in here and help you out. I searched pricewatch and didnt come up with much as far as slot loading. What was the mesh thing you were talking about?
I believe Zap used the Pioneer 106S DVDROM. I think it was only DVD, no CDRW. I was going to get this drive when I was purchasing my new computer parts, but I wanted to order everything from one site, and the company discontinued selling it when I went to purchase (but then put it back up a week later ). Its supposed to be an awesome drive and very quiet (with an update to make it even quieter ). Good luck with the project
This could get interesting. Cant wait to see what you do with this. Make me happy. lol Nice tower btw.
