ok i know this is a bit desperate ...but desperate times require desperate measures

    i've got the following:

    - a desktop pc with an ATI with 1 DVI and 1 VGA port
    - a old fashioned TV with S-video AV port
    - one s-video cable (in both ends)
    - one converter s-video to VGA cable

    i do the following:

    1. i connect the converter to the s-video cable , thus creating a s-video to vga cable
    2. i connect the s-video cable end to the TV and the VGA end to my ATI (VGA port). The DVI port has TFT monitor connected and it's working fine, both ports work fine btw.
    3. i fire up the desktop computer
    4. the TV cannot be found as a secondary monitor no matter what i do. Yes i've got the latest drivers installed and all, the ATI card is just one year old. The operating system is Windows 7.

find what i'm doing wrong and win a cookie

    :worried:

    cheerios

Sadly, to my knowledge, you can't convert VGA to s-Video with a simple cable, UNLESS your graphic card specifically supports it. Basically, the graphic card simply uses the unused pins of VGA, to output S-Video, which the cable you bough, provides

You really need to get a converter box to do this.

    can't you return it?
If not, try eBay, and try and get some money back.
