    Yes. The more advanced AF modules have more cross type then a less advanced module. An example would be nikon's Multicam 3500. It has 51 AF points, with the center 15 being cross type. Those 15 rock in near darkness. The remaining 36 are good, but when you need the camera to "see" in the dark, you stick with the center ones.

    Generally, in less sophisticated AF systems, they give only the center point a cross type. Hence the "focus and recompose" style of shooting. This is also why you'll see written that you can only use the center AF point for lenses with higher base f stops, usually f/5.6 being the point where most AF modules stop working. Google around a bit and look at the layouts of various cameras, you'll start to see what I mean.

    #3 use photomatrix and do a single hdr convertion
