Gaming Shattered Horizon Hands-On Preview

We go for a float in zero gravity with Futuremark's first outing as a game developer, Shattered Horizon. How does this space-based multiplayer shooter hold up to our scrutiny and how likely is it that we'll vomit from motion sickness? There's only one way to find out!

 

Looks like a really interesting game, I will be keeping an eye on this.

It's about time Futuremark brought something out - I'd love to see this used as a benchmark - HURH HURH!

 

No reason why frag grenades wouldn't work in space. Obviously they'd need a self-oxidising explosive and they wouldn't produce a shock wave, but the shrapnel would be even more deadly than on Earth.

I remember reading about this last summer and was really excited about its release, then it disapeared from the radar and i thought futuremark had binned the idea. And now, after all this time they announce its multi player only !

Some of us like sitting playing by ourselves, Why would they limit there audience like that ? It can't be that hard to implement a basic story mode for a single player game !

 

For £10-15, maybe. Would need a single-player component for my interest. Can see the multiplayer getting old quickly. Still, nice experiment. Feels like a mini-game from your impressions. Even though this is PC orientated, they should release it on LIVE arcade for more exposure.

Btw is it all one big level or are there multiple arenas?

 

Possible that getting AI to work in 3 dimensions was too hard a challenge.

 

is it me or the screenshots makes me feel like it's a Tribes game in zero-G?

hope the hardware requirement is like Crysis: pushing the PC hardware market.

 

it does seem to have that sort of feel. i like the fact everyone has only one weapon too. will make things truly balanced.

If ditching the damn single-player mode helps lower the price by a single €/£/$, I'm all in. Just ditch the stupid tube-running linear BS, because that's all you get in FPS anyway, isn't it?

Sorta looking forward, still not too excited though. It's been a long while since the last big Finnish games, so it's about time for something to come up.

 

At the start of the preview, I couldn't help thinking 'oh, so it's a multiplayer version of Descent without the spaceship' but reading through, it does sound really interesting (not that an update of Descent wouldn't be)

 

You know the meme that whenever someone mentions Deus Ex it gets reinstalled? Well, to me Ender's Game is the Deus Ex of science fiction novels.

enders game would make such an incredible video game though, i know theres been that XBLA thing but a full on single player campaign (maybe with RPG gubbins) is what we want

 

Agree on the hardware thing! PC market is standing still. Good to see a PC exclusive for once, and this looks like an interesting one, space is the final frontier right?

 

Need a decent multiplayer shooter to as an alternative to Valve's offerings, seeing as they seem to be obssessed with hats at the minute.

Hope the game engine isn't too demanding, as the best mutiplayer games have a good balance of eye candy vs playability, imo.

 

This is a game I've been on edge for since its was announced. Sadly did not get into the beta though. I'me very supprised that this kind of game has not been explored before too. Non-MMO multi Wing Commander is another I'm waiting on.

I really wish they picked a date that did not go head on with MW2. We all know this will end badly, but you can hope. Maybe they can use 3DMark to help market it and hope the low price makes it a 'aswell as' buy.
