Industry ships goods to commercial, hence the industry stays in business and generates profits (and in turns provides works). However, it also produces freight that can be shipped out to the global market via air or road (which directly generates profit for the city's coffers, plus the tax money).

As for the GlassBox simulation, yes, each sim leaves home every day and simply goes to the first available job. They then leave that job at the end of the day, and return to the first house they go past that has space. Means that each agent in the simulation doesn't get overly complex in regards to where to live/work. Maxis have however said they're continuing to work on traffic/pathfinding as that is an area definitely in need of some tweaks.

But it is possible to run a region with no industry in it at all, this is disappointing in my view. It does indeed provide jobs but goods will appear (at the moment at least) without industry.

Yes you can run without industry - ever heard of service commercial? It's also implied that goods will come from external sources. I for one like not having huge quantities of factories, as they create loads of pollution!

Has anybody seen the police/fire helicoptors flying? Mine just seems to sit on the pad, which strikes me as a very expensive ornament (60k + 1k/hr running).

Im having a problem sending invites to people for my EUW4 region. I have added all the people that have posted there ID in this thread but I can only send invites to four of them and I must have added 16+ people. Anyone know how to fix this.

Well I've managed a few hours play time now and I'm really liking it so far, my first couple of cities have turned into chaos, to be fair i was just randomly plopping stuff down as and when required with little pre planning, and upgrading the road network to fast just caused huge problems with traffic.

My latest city I decided to go with a low density grid with basic services and was going nicely with a $10000 income and a nice healthy bank balance, but have suffered a zombie outbreak. I'm intending to use this city firstly to fund some of my other cities in the region, and then to start drilling and mining operations,

Overall I'm glad I bought the game, yes there are still some bugs to be ironed out and the traffic issues require a little pre planning but are manageable, there's a you tube clip of someone who has achieved a population over 400k without any mass transit, so it can be done,.

Oh, I've yet to have any server issues, so hopefully they've got that under control and we'll start to see features that were removed re implemented soon.

Im running a i5 3450 (stock) with 8 Gig of ram and an 8800GT and am able to have all settings set to high and AA on averaging approx 23fps at 1440x900

I think they only operate in neighbor citys, they may need to be assigned to before they fly off and start putting out fires.

I took the plunge as well! Quite enjoying it. Having trouble with fires though....is it better to have more garages on one fire station? Or to have multiple stations...?

I mentioned it earlier, just didn't link to it. However, region play is an integral part of the game as the current city size is too small to be a self-sufficient entity, which is why the online element is there.

I’m really enjoying the region play with friends. We have a 9 city region, with 1 slot for a great work.
We have all now expanded to a second city and it’s amazing how the dynamic changes. My first city was a gambling city – will excellent regional police and fire services. I hit 125kpop, high density zones for all types, had excellent public transport including: an amazing bus service, rail links, good traffic control, a ferry and cruise ship port, expo centre, big casino and good tourist attractions. My costs were high and I was only making about 1.5k profit per hour. It did however, have 3.5k of unemployment ;/

One of my friends then made a poor mans low to med density city, that was primarily to provide low value works to all those low value industry and commercial jobs that we could not fill. That had the effect of massively reducing unemployment in all our cities but also had an unintended side effect that was not obvious until I founded my own second city.
When I founded my next city, there was zero residential demand! So I made it a massive 50% or more) industrial and shopping hub, as the regional demand indicators showed we lacked enough of both. No doubt, a by-product of over expansion on my friend’s workers town. So I had a new town, with a population of only 2000, but I was making in excess of 5000 per hour, up to over 7000 per hour once my pop hit 2500! People were commuting on mass to this place, initially via the existing regional busses and then more when I added a park and ride and a municipal bus depot.
I had so much money rolling in, that I plopped a University, which none of us could afford or had space for in our other cities. I immediately hit the 800 students barrier, plopped another halls, hit that barrier, then plopped a school of engineering. I have now plopped my second halls and await the requirements to unlock the school of science. Because pre uni education is very good elsewhere, and we have a good number of high pop cities with good transport links, I must be getting every possible student!
Currently researching the advanced wind turbines and because I plopped my uni in the middle of my industrial, a lot of it has gone high tech, so pollution is dropping and income rising even further.

My other mate has focused on a failed oil town and a very successful low density but high land value rich person’s town!

the raw goods are just not worth the time setting up at the moment.

Coal and oil and ore run out so fast its not even funny. you get aprox 9months from a coal mine and 8months from an ore mine so it just disapears in no time.

Im currently turning processors into tv industry and making a fortune out of it.

hit 125k pop dout it will go alot higher for a first city, may have to start a new region soon or try and get the great works built.

The ore's worth it for the initial setup of your processor factories but you'll need to start importing what else you need if you want to continue I think.

But you're right about the natural resources, you can't just live off them like you could in previous games.

The more we play of this game the more we need to think in the long term about how we're going to make cash, which is interesting.

Because my neighbours town went tits up my residential area's lost all of its cash.

    OK double post.

To the people of "Antartica?" if anyone has the option, could they get some residential built up along with a way of commuting?

I have the fire, police, garbage, recycling potential but not enough workers in "Lance's Greed town" and a full 200,000 pop in "Lance's big bromley" that is currently giving workers to Cardiff, Lance's Greed town & I believe MrMonkey.

If people with blank city's could just build some roads, houses & import everything else they need I'll be able to improve a bit.
