My name can be removed from the swap list, my red TK has gone to a friend who needed a new keyboard. I got to have a quick go with it before she took it and I must say the red switches are far better than I thought they'd be. I'd kinda decided I wouldn't like them based on other people's opinions and assumptions/imagination on my part, but they're actually not bad. I think if anything I'd like them to be a bit heavier so I'd probably prefer blacks if I did get something with linear switches, but having now used them I'd not avoid them in future.
TBH I'm not sure many swaps are going to happen... if it was blues vs browns I think there'd be a fair bit of swapping going on, but most people are selling their reds on (myself included, to a mate at uni). Ah well - it was a bit of an adventure for sure!
I've actually taken the Model M out of service, for now, and am using my Red. Once I got it open and tried it I became more convinced. Haven't done a lot of typing on it yet though. What was fun was my partner's reaction: I asked her if we should set it aside as a keyboard for a build for her nephew, she saw the keyboard with the lights, sat down and typed on it, and said heck no we're keeping it and no he can't have it, it's pretty, and we're swapping out the Model M (much better keys but it doesn't look half as pretty!) I do believe I saw gadget lust in her eyes.
I've finally got mine, and I'm trying it out instead of the Corsair K60. Currently, I think I like it better - due to the backlighting and the smaller size (my desk is pretty small and this suits it better). I do like the textured WASD keys on the Corsair but I guess that is the beauty of mechanicals isn't it - I could potentially replace them. I got reds by the way - its mostly used for gaming so I guess that suits me!
...and work has decided that I'm/we're not allowed to use our own peripherals - yay So might well be looking to offload my TK brown as I don't really have the space/need for a second keyboard at home - I will put up a for sale thread if and when I do. Big Up the PoS mismatched HP keyboards and mice I get to use day in day out
Same with my work as they don't like us disconnecting work supplied kit. They say too many PC's have been damaged and they are very expensive to replace approx £600 a throw according to my team manager. Really, SFF Dell i3 (second gen at that) were going for around £90 a go used on ebay when I last looked. They haven't noticed my wireless mouse yet though
Indeed. I asked for a larger mouse, preferably wireless and got given a mini travel wireless mouse - go figure. I have been referred to Occupational Health who will "assess my needs" and then tell IT what too buy. I suspect I will end up with 1 ergonomic keyboard (non-mechanical) and no change in mouse. Half a mind to just use it anyway, and just unplug it every night...
Some places are dead weird! I have a rep at work for always having a different keyboard. I think people just assume I'm weird. They're largely correct. My CM Storm board is now my work board. It's actually pretty good. Hate the feel of the caps though so I'll probably change them.
Defence company with outsourced IT - equal mix of mini-hitlers, Teflon(tm)-shouldered work-shy oiks, and call-centre know-nothing drones.
My IT dept tried to pooh-pooh my decision to bring my own mouse and keyboard, ages ago. I just brass-necked it and told them I refuse to work with sh!te. Never heard a thing after that. I brought my own monitor in too, because working in the office off a laptop screen is the pits. They won that argument but only by coughing up for a nice 24" Dell IPS unit.
Bringing my own in and damning the consequences will probably be my end-game. Monitors are one area I have made progress in, I now between my 2 PCs I have 2 24" HP screens, admittedly they're mismatched but as its taken nearly 2years to get the second (to replace a 19" 4:3) its no surprise. Just need to replace the ancient 20" 4:3... Oh and they're too cheap to provide proper monitor stands, so I have them stood on piles of paper (~10 reams)... Good for standing the Lego collection on, but not good for desk space...
After nearly two weeks my TK that should have been an XTI has finally been collected, now I just have to wait 7 working days for the refund. Seriously never ordering online from Argos again.
Haha I took my 3007 in to work when I got a 3008 for home. It raised more eyebrows than the keyboards!
I work for Agilisys who provide the staff and IT equipment for the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline. I've been doing the job since before then when it was Consumer Direct for the now dead OFT. If you've ever called that service there's a high chance you have spoken to me. The IT techs we have for the most part are pretty decent guys, always used to ask for my input when they were building their own new PC's for home use. One of them is a complete and utter arse biscuit though and he's got it in for me.
Given that "bring you own keyboard in to use at work" means "bring an external USB device in and plug it right into a machine with internal network access" it's relatively understandable as a security policy. Having IT check every keyboard/mouse/etc by opening it up and digging around for rogue microcontrollers (or dumping and dissecting the USB controller firmware because you can hide data there too) is not really feasible.
Damn, I should've done that with mine - maybe the IT monkeys would've bought me a new 30" screen for my office!
