As it says on the tin; what would be the best bang-for-buck "upgrade"/new build I could get for the same price as an Xbox Series X, so ~£500? and get a equivalent gaming experience...

I am so out of the loop, i dont even know where to begin...

I would be building into the Fractal Define R5 in my sig (gaming); and re-using the SSDs as storage. If i can re-use anything else that would be grand; but suspect not :(

    Any pointers would be great!

Honestly, keeping an eye on the marketplace on here. You'll be looking at CPU, M/B and GPU to maximise your spending. There's also things like upgrading to new versions of windows, as they'll allow for more advanced API's and multicore optimisations.

and, assuming you're working from the specs in your sig... you might want to work an nvme ssd into the mix too if you can.

You can get a 3070 on ebay for £300 easy, would leave you with £200. You could get a ddr4 platform so you can keep your ram, am4 mobo and 5600 would be a good upgrade over current set up, room for performance bump later with a 5800x3d. Might be worth getting a new PSU too.

Edit: there's a 2080ti on the marketplace for £260. Bargain.

isn't 3570 / ivy bridge not DDR3? i initially made that mistake, had an oh **** moment and had to go back and add ram to the linked spec above.

God dam. I should have known as I had(and still have) the absolute **** when it came to ddr3. Was a Gskill set that had ridiculously tight timings. Did 1600 at cas 6 stock xmp profile, but rated to do 2133 at cas 9. If you pushed it and got a bit lucky it would do 2133 cas 7, lowest I ever got stable was cas 8.

I'd still dump £300 on the GPU (or 260 on the 2080ti in the marketplace, which performs equal to a 3070). £200 should be plenty for a CPU/mobo/ram combo. Stick up a wanted in the marketplace, someone might have something suitable.

whether any of it will get you 'equivalent gaming experience' to a eggbox, esp in titles like starfield, is probably open for debate. but there are definately deals to be had.
