Yes, if only to show that someone is paying attention and that abuses of the power inherent in low-level control of the internet will be noticed and reported.

They've done fine so far, but given the US abuses in other activities I think that it bears watching.

Somthing that I don't think has been made clear is that the US feels that it does own the internet and it contracting with iCANN to operate it. Regardless of who gets the contract, as long as the US feels that it owns the net I have a problem with it. Keep ICANN, dump the US.

we developed the Net to launch Nukes way back when, so using it for war is nothing out of its conception, it is the reason it was conceived.

As for it staying under US control, I like it, it benefits me having the internet directly under the control of my elected officials (Bush cant touch it, it is under congress). We invented, so we welcome you to enjoy the fruits of our labour, just so long as we control it.

Technically it was developed as a communication method in case of nuclear war.

I dont really care who controls it so long as it doesnt become more difficult to use, privacy isnt compromised, and things dont go badly for the people at the ends of the machines.

Da Dego you scare me with red letters..... :waah:

as for controling the internet..... the USA invented it.... is it patented or limited of use by any contry? i think not........

the internet is something global and free, something very very very important in every day life for millions of people around the world, it should be controled by a council composed by a representative of each country in the world or the most consuming or dense internet using countries, this way all decisions would be done democraticly, it would not fall under US or UN or EU control, it would be controled by all.

for now the US are stable, but for how long? i am not implying it is a bad country, but it is ONE country, and if it gets fubared.... well...... goodbye internet as we know it.

as for all the EU, US, UN flamers please live in this world in peace and share with all people the wonders of the world, there is enough for everyone :thumb: .

at least the internet is not a series of tubes. or is it............?

I think I remember when this issue first popped up a year ago (at least to my knowledge) the main argument was that other countries were getting shafted. The US and UK were getting all the prime IP's and DNS entries leaving barely any prime selections for other countries.

However, since then.. IPv6 has made considerable headway and looks to start seeing deployment in the near future. That pretty much makes the whole complaint moot.. but since the ball got started rolling.. might as well keep it going.. right?

I share the belief that since the US invented it.. they should keep it... only under the context that they arent abusing it. While I'll admit, I take pride in the fact that I'm American. While there are some... negative things my county does that can views upon with a frown.. there is an equal if not MORE good that my country does and has done for the world.

If any users were ever horribly suffering due to US control over the internet, then proud of my nationality or not I would be against it. I believe its the next step we will all have to take sooner rather than later.. the ability to shed nationalistic racism and view every person of every nation on equal ground.

But, nothing is being harmed with the current situation orther than in principle. Oh and by the way, I do take offense in all the US bashing that appears to be thrown around here (as well as bashing toward other nations.. though to a lesser degree since it doesnt hit home quite as effectively). No, we're not perfect.. but my country, and my forefathers have contributed an aweful lot for the betterment of this world and freedom of all peoples. Its slightly depressing when people forget that and when they generalize the United States and its citizens they generalize it on the pointing end of the stick and selectively choose the traits to throw into this "generalization". If you're going to say "United states likes to control things outside its borders" why dont you also consider what this world would be like if we were the isolationists you are proclaiming we should be.

    Good day.

Indeed, IPV4 has major issues. IIRC more IP addresses were assigned to American colleges and universities then were alloted to the entirity of India, a country with roughly 1/6th of the worlds population in it. As you say though, IPv6 is solving that problem, it should have been brought in ages ago though.

for those asking, and correct me if i am wrong, IPv4 supports 4.3×10^9 (4.3 billion) addresses and IPv6 supports 3.4×10^38 addresses, this is a number with 37 zeros in it...... nice........... by wikipedia its 5×10^28(50 octillion) for each of the roughly 6.5 billion people alive today. that is more than enough i think :D

Exactly! That's why the W3C should have control over it.

Seriously people, as long as it works leave it alone. If we were having problems i would support change, but for now it is perfectly fine. All of the politicians sleep together so it doesnt matter very much who has the visible control.

Okay, as a red blooded american, and a person in love with most of europe, here is what I have to say, that really means very little. The US has done fine so far, and the only real impact that I think our government has made is working against the .XXX TLD other than that, I think we have done a fine job. I see no reason to take it from the US, because as far as I know that would require alot of building of new infrastructure, and alot of effort for a very dull job.

For the people who say that no government can handle it, WHY NOT?! any stable government has in place enough regulation or pissed people to keep then from doing stupid, and It keeps out of the hands of money hungry corporations. Just think if a pirvate business with no governmental ties were in control, what is there to prevent them from doing something rash. (I dont know what that is at the moment, but it could get real ugly)

well, whatever, as long as I dont see any changes, I will continue to be a happy person

    Two things...

    1. Until IPV6 is out the US has to maintain its control. Simply put there is a disproportionate IP distribution. The US has half the IP's for 1/18th of the population. You could say this is unfair and you would be correct, but US had early adoption for obvious reasons. Universities were given a whole class A!!! Fast forward to the early 90's.... TADAAAA The rest of the world plugged in and bamn were out of IP's.

Their answer was IPV6, but everything had to be re dun. Along came CISCO (I think) with NAT and PAT... Problem solved. Or so they thought fast forward to present and NAT and PAT can no longer do the job. So IPV6 is back... The US will oversee the transition. Make sure that it doesn't get screwed out of spite, and then hand over the keys to the castle.

    2. I blame the flaming on the author... Your story was just fine... until this...

The second i read that paragraph. I really didn't want to "hop over to the forums" because I knew I had 3 pages of US/EU bashing with two real comments. Dude were opinionated enough don't inflame us!

Give it to google...they seem to be the most popular people on the web...

seriously though, if it's been owned by the US this long, and works ok, then what's the big problem?
