I wonder why do they still separate 8 and 8.1, considering 8.1 being equivalent of a XP/Vista/7 service pack.

And what is then for XP ? 14 or 23% ?

Not sure if the Windows 8 Marmite thread is the best place for Windows 9 related stuff, but as we don't have a Windows 9 Marmite thread i guess here is a good a place as any.

As so much focus has been on the return of the Start Menu with Windows 9 i thought someone may like to see it in action on the preview build.

Interesting. May offer the best of both worlds. Also good to see a bit more drop shadow on the windows. Just the chrome needs a bit more work (and the colours. Microsoft was never good at picking a decent palette).

There are rumors going around that Windows 9 maybe free for Windows 8.1 users, or possibly a $20 upgrade.

Upgrades are a messy though when it comes to things like reinstall.

Was waiting for the preview to start a new thread or use a existing one to drop W9 related stuff.
Starting to feel that way, but have to try it before.

I'm sure that you will also be able to order a Windows 9 installation DVD for about a tenner extra.

    Next First World problem? :p

Great ripped by MS again. A cd costs about a quid to send and less than a few cent to make.

Well, alternatively you can download the .ISO for free from the Microsoft website and burn your own. In fact you can slip-stream any updates into it. As long as you have bought a licence, it doesn't matter, no?

There's still the matter of licensing. I belive an 8.0 key won't work with an 8.1 install. Although I saw roumer that MS would go to a steam style method of managing license. So you could deactivate a machine move the license etc. Which would be great

It's an odd one... You can't install 8.1 with an 8.0 key [or I couldn't with mine without poking the ISO with a stick], but once it's installed it'll accept/activate with an 8.0 key no bother...

And last time I tried the MS site would let you download an 8.1 ISO with a 8.0 key...

That's irrelevant. If you wish to install Windows 9, I presume you'd be buying a Windows 9 licence key, downloading a Windows 9 .ISO and burning your own Windows 9 installation DVD.

Still not seeing your problem.

Do you get a license key or does the upgrade run as an installer. You also run into the upgrade only license issue when doing a fresh install

for 9? tbh until it lands we won't know...

for 8.x you got a key and used it to d/l an iso either direct from the site or from within an installer...
