Films Recommend me a good horror

I'll vote for Event Horizon, I've never seen a movie that f***ed with my mind like that one.

Actually many people here were of a similar opinion.

How about "One Night In Paris" that one HAS to be horrible...
I tried to download it once, but after thinking about it, I stopped the download and erased the files...

 

Audition was quite good. It's Japanese and possibly more psychological than gory, as all the best horrors should be, though it does have some considerable unpleasantness.

Now I think of it, I can't remember many of the specifics, but I do fancy a slice of cheese.

 

REC was absolutely terrible. I think people only took notice of it because of the format and it's foreign-ness. Seriously. Just watch The Shining or something.

 

Hell Yeah, Event Horizon is a proper poop your pants film, watch it late on your own in a dark room!!! My wife refuses to watch this film again! It's a bit old but if you haven't seen it...

 

In all honesty, there were only a couple that i enjoyed int he past few years:
The ring (the first part, not the sh*tty "oh-noes-crazy-deer-in-the-path-whatever-shall-we-do-oh-noes" piece of trash)
Saw (1 and 2 - the rest was "rewind-watch-the-same-movie-again")
Hostel (the first one - not so much of a new concept at all, but BRUTAL in the idea and the way they got me thinking about the sick idea and the fact that something like that might just exist. Also - hot nekkid chixz0rz in the beginning, followed by violence... good stuff... AVOID the second one like suicide bombers, though... it's so poor that there are scenes where you see the green screen...no kidding)
Behind the Mask - not a horror, but it's horror themed and great fun to watch.
Beowulf - so gross i almost puked through my nose...

on that note, if someone recommends me ANOTHER horror that has the same concept as Saw, hostel, or ANY "freaky chick in the water" rubbish in it, i will physically pick up a camcoder and direct and star in my own slasher movie... co-starring the person who recommended it... Movie with names like "dark water", "the darkness", "lady in the water" or any other "oh-noes-a-chicky-that-really-just-wants-a-mommy-and-kills-everyone-for-it" trash.

 

saw is not really a horror if you ask me - well, i never got scared watching it.
beowulf - daaamn i agree with you. not scary again (really, the only thing that has genuinely creeped me out - as an adult - is the shining), but woah. can't believe that was a 12A - some bits were plain horrific. but a bit of an insipid movie overall.

 

Yeah. SAW isn't really a horror... more like a violent thriller...
as for beowulf, it's gross how they managed to muck up the film...

 

The only decent horror (like genuine horror, not slasher or gore porn or anything else) worth watching recently is The Orphanage. Absolutely brilliant Spanish horror produced by Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth). One of the most mature, scary and downright awesome films I've seen in ages, and mostly without resorting to any gore. It's a similer styled film to The Shining, but I personally actually enjoyed a lot more. Seriously, it's brilliant, go watch right now.

 

I actually forgot about The Orphanage. It was good indeed. I hate having to read subtitles usually but in this case I actually really enjoyed the film and didn't really notice the annoyance of reading subs.

Start with the classics:

The Haunting (1963) --black and white version, not the execrable remake. If you liked that, you'll like:
The Legend of Hell House;

John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) --definitely the one closest to Robert Bloch's story Who Goes There?. Watch the old black-and-white version only for giggles;

Alien (1997) --come on, how can you not watch that?

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) --one black-and-white version that consistently remains better than all the feeble remakes. You can't improve on perfection.

Pan's Labyrinth (2006) --proof that ordinary people are way scarier than monsters will ever be. Haunting in every sense of the word.

 

I thought it was weak. There was no explanation for what was going on except "Oh, perhaps when that spaceship made the hyperspace jump (with its new, experimental hyperdrive engine) it accidentally ended up in Hell". Please. More logical would be that it accidentally made a tear/portal into the fifth dimension, which concerns the first fundamentals of probabilities. Basically, because of this tear the boundary between what is real and imagined breaks down. Anything can become real --even your worst nightmares...

 

Great film. I prefer the look of the makeup effects to most of the cgi monsters in today's films.

switchblade romance (aka haute tension), is very good if you don't mind the subtitles

house of 1000 corpses (and devils rejects and rob zombies halloween)

The shining is an abosolute classic.As is Alien, The original Halloween and Deliverance (all of which don't look too dated like Friday the 13th and all the nightmare on elm st series)

Wrong Turn is sprisingly good.

Silence of the lambs

Stephen Kings IT is brilliant

 

30 days of night

 

Depending on how seriously you take your horror, any of the phantasm films are genius
