I don't have a car, but over here everyone just use a scraper. What's wrong with it?

In the tropical UK the warm water may do the trick, but when it's ACTUALLY COLD, not just a tad frosty, the water will just freeze somewhere else and cause even more problems...

 

turn the car heat up
pull out the scraper
scrape the windows clean (or at least clear enough so they will be clean by the time I hit the end of the road)
get into warmish car
drive to school
repeat at 10PM when leaving school

On a serious note regarding the scrapers though... they really don't appeal to me. I've seen what one bad (plastic) scraper can do to a windscreen. They leave terrible scores and plastic marks on the glass. I always stick to the heater on full. Seriously - it takes no time at all.

 

True. In the UK they even put on winter clothes before temperatures hit zero...

 

I use a jacket whereas everyone else uses t-shirts, beat that.

All scrapers here, too. And in a much more comparable climate as well.

To save time I just scrape a view port out of the windshield ice and roll the door windows down. Drive with a coat and gloves and it's not so bad. Doubt that works with your ACTUAL COLD though.

 

Put RainX on your windows. Did that last year and often I wouldn't even get frost on the windows. IF I did, it would come off by turning on the wipers for a few seconds. Never really had to scrap it. Works awesome. It lasts like 3 months untill it starts not being effective then you need to put it on again.

 

It works, but if you get caught by the police doing that you'll loose your lisence, and probably get a pretty hefty fine.

The problem with rainex is that it makes the windshield "sticky" making your wipers noisy and poorly performing. I figured out this the hard way... It does work if your windshield is slightly worn, though.

I park my car so that the front is facing east at home, this way when the sun comes up it helps defrost it a bit. On earlies though warm water..

 

I park it in the garage

If it is parked outside it goes something like this...

Walk outside
Suck off my key to warm it up
blow on my locks to unfreeze them
unlock door
get in
key in ignition
pull choke out all the way
twist key
roar!
heater on hot pointing at windscreen
heated rear window on
get out and scrape
go to work



If I can survive in my 25 year old mini, you all should be fine too!

My car is horrible in cold weather the windows are a nightmare it won't heat up unless i move off so im pearing through this little misty gap in my window trying not to hit school kids somedays

Then when i come back from work it just miss fires constantly so im going like 10 miles an hour foot to the ground and its just shaking and shuddering till it warms up! sometimes i have to pull over and put my jacket over the engine and give it some hot chocolate to warm it up faster

Though you need to add step 3.5 - Say "brrrr".

 

Why don't you put something like an old sheet/towel over the windscreen at night? In theory it'd shield it from all the frost etc, and then you can just stick it in the boot, on a carrier bag or something. The car heating up will help dry it out a little, stick it on a radiator or something if you get a chance, rinse and repeat.

Me, I just use the heated windscreen. But a scraper used to be weapon of choice, and frozen digits.
