Actually, school, if anything, is much more about teaching life skills than just imparting information. After all, if you can learn how to do pythagoras, then you can learn how to do your taxes.

But clearly if every subject were like ICT then schools would be much better.

May I ask what ICT was like when you were in school/ in your school? (Sorry, I'm not sure if you're still a student or have a teaching job ect :D)

It was living hell, simply the most tedious and dull thing around. Absolutely trivial as well and completely useless.

Ah, then it's no different now. Sorry, I wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic about the subject now.

Nevertheless, it's quite demotivating when some 16 year olds can't even turn the computer on.

A class on life skills would ( have been ) be nice really- true, if you can learn mathematic principles ( what use are parallel equations again in every day terms? ) then you can learn how to fill out forms and calculate how much you need to pay for different expenditures, but in reality- you still need to actually be taught those things in order to learn them; they aren't taught though, that's the point of the demote.

Ofcourse, parents and friends area valuable source of help and advice, as are places like the CAB and dedicated self-help forums etc etc, but all the same, it would be nice if genuine life skills were taught in schools, we'd have fewer generations of completely brain-dead incompetent kids who can't tie their own laces or figure out how to change a light bulb without the government having to hold their hand and mollycoddle them every step of the way...

And yeah, ICT was totally useless in my day too; I remember something about making a pie chart and visiting the Dentist to get some leaflets for a project ( :eyebrow: ), little else of any worth ( and all done done on ancient IBMs, with dot matrix printers ). I am pretty much self-taught when it comes to computers- shame some people don't possess or express enough interest to become competent/literate as such...

Math in real life - there was only one case where i needed anything more than the basic operators (+-*/) while programming a financial software.

Understanding percentages and annual percentage repayments and how much it would cost to repay pay-day loans would have done a lot of my mates a favor. Learning how to budget would also be a good idea. While it is brushed upon, i think there should be better activities and more stress put onto those skills.

Ah, point taken- they do ruin a lot of pictures.

Regards lessons in useful 'life' subjects- I'm sure I read the education system in the UK is getting a massive shake up soon, to introduce a French style of lessons/exams ( baccalaureate ), and that hopefully means more vocational subjects ( sort of thing you would do later at college or university, but many if not most don't go onto higher education; I didn't either as I did not fancy being ~£20,000 in debt with no guarantee of a job at the end ).

Well, there is PHSE which at least covers some of those things. Problem is, no-one really remembers anything they're taught in those classes.

I think those people are better placed to give that help in the first place. Given the choice between the government making helpfull guides and video tutorials on how to do all those things or trying to remeber back on something I was taught in a rowdy classroom with the possibility of an incompetent teacher (not the case for me, but it will have been for many people) I know which one I would choose. Things like teaching how to manage money or how to write your CV in schools I would agree with, but showing someone how to file a tax return?

True enough, it's a miracle I can remember anything some days... :D

I suppose the difference is that today, the web is massive and guides are everywhere, nearly everyone can get online at school & at home, so finding help with such things is far easier than in the days of Windows 3.0 and 56k modems....

True story time: In America they are going to ban POV ( point of view ) video equipment that r/c pilots use to fly their planes and helicopters, as though they were actually in the pilot seat, vs being stood on the ground. The reason for this being that a few morons have attempted to weaponize r/c aircraft for terrorist purposes and as a simple experiment ( plane packed with explosives but found before being launched, heli with a gun strapped to it ). Point being, America will happily ban a massive emerging part of hobby world because of a couple isolated incidents that caused no deaths, but have the potential to, but they all go mental and lose their sh*t if anyone mentions even a curb on gun ownership ( which cause millions of deaths a year ). I'm pro gun, pro gun control- figure that one out....

So you're saying that ONLY sensible people should have a gun? Thats crazy talk. Guns should only be owned by crazy people who want to shoot up malls.

I two would say that I am pro gun, pro gun control, you just need to control their supply properly and then the crazy's can't get a hold of them so easily.

For as long as guns are available in any form, legally or illegally, nutters will get hold of them and kill people.

It used to be stones a long time ago. Then spears and axes. Then swords and maces. Finally guns. Human condition. Demote.
