To be fair, it looks like you've put four hours' work into it!

If this is ruining your life, what have you been doing with spuds?

It's not ruining my life, but it really really could have....

Still doing stuff to the new house prior to moving in - there's a lot more to do than we'd hoped, to the tune of tens of thousands of pounds - and the plumber/gas fitter's finishing up.

There's a flueless gas fire fitted - to the chimney breast, oddly - in the living room. Modern-looking thing, but ill-treated (like everything else in the house) - covered in a layer of muck on top, the click-clack that holds the control panel cover shut is busted, and the bottom rear panel's been kicked-in. Had the plumber do a safety check, because obviously.

It's pumping out VAST AMOUNTS OF CARBON MONOXIDE. Deadly amounts. Like, he's not really sure how the previous owners survived - other than the fact it's a completely open-plan layout downstairs and there's a big-ass hole in the front wall masquerading as a "vent."

No, the previous owners did not have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted. (Nor any working smoke alarms, for that matter - one of the ones I took off the ceiling was "REPLACE BY 2011"...) Could explain a lot about some of the bizarre DIY around the place, that.

Check your gas equipment regularly, people - or, if you can't afford a proper safety test, at least spend the £20 or so on a reputable carbon monoxide alarm!

When our boiler started acting out I moved the monoxide detector right next to it for early warning.

When we moved into our current house, it didn't have smoke detectors :sigh:

I for one, am so very glad that I frequent a forum that is also frequented by a highly regarded tech author. Until now, I never knew the term click-clack ! :)

Click clack was on a safety advert for seatbelts for awhile. Hadn’t heard the term prior to that.

That was "clunk-click, every trip," as far as I recall. The campaign was introduced alongside the laws mandating seatbelt use.

Shame about the celebrity originally used to front that campaign.

I had Stardust down in my head as a nonce but searching Google there is nothing saying he was? Perhaps he's too easily conflated with Glitter?

I'm sure click-clack machines were those ancient things you used to use to get an imprint of a card for sales.

Zip-zaps! Had to use one of those in Morrisons a few years back, 'cos the network was down and none of the checkouts could take cards...

What's ruining your life right now?

A long story I won't elaborate on further here but can be summed up thusly - I hate being right.

Totally ruined this classic tune for me. Although I guess in the grand scheme of things, that's nothing.

We moved last year. No smoke detectors and no sign there ever had been. Promptly rectified (though not as promptly as it should have been)
