Not kidding, 'oh look here is a link that somehow references the illegal act with which you are accused of'.

The reply is basically saying "here I am sounding helpful and listening to your concern so you don't think Virgin CS doesn't answer customer questions"

    however

"we are not getting involved, and are distancing ourselves from potential illegal activities committed with our service"

    It's a non-answer answer.

If that email is anything to go by, Virgin Media have been moonlighting writing 419 spam.

Just came across this story on the BBC where an elderly couple where accused of illegal downloading. Their case was dropped (as they never play games or knew what p2p was) and it highlights what most of us know, that DL are just sending out letters to anyone, with very little solid evidence. Which? have got on the case and a law firm called Lawdit add their thoughts. Glad to see some action on this, hopefully this will bring the bullying tactics of DL into the mainstream.

    ISP

I work for a isp and we cant fight back im afraid we have been given a court order to provide the information on the customers and there is nothing we can do to stop them. if anyone has a letter that the have been sent it would be extremly helpful if you have one so we can try and fight it. :thumb:

"We've had lots of calls in the last 48 hours," he told The Register, "a lady in her seventies has been in touch to say she's been accused of filesharing gay porn!"

    OMG LOL!!!! :hehe:

My dad got a letter from DL on the 18th saying he had downloaded and shared Scooter - Jumping all over the world!!!

    A) Scooter is the worst group in the world so why would he download their album
    B) The letter is full of discrepancies (they say the album was released in the UK on October 10th when in fact it was released on May 5th)
C)The date they got information from our isp which was in May is one month befor the Court order they got from Germany in June. Surely this makes their so called evidence illegal???

You can't use tapped phone conversation in court if you don't have a court order!!!

Also DL say we used Bit Torrent to download said album but as of February 25 2007 they launched their new service of paying for downloads and as the offense supposedly took place this year how could we/he have done so???

these letters seem to be blackmail
if you settle for on track what stops them coming knocking on your door next week for a different track? and another £500+
assuming you used a bit torrent then there is likly to be more than one infringement, has anyone tried to draw a line under it all by asking for all infringements to be taken into consideration?

could these nasty people be even more nastier.
how difficult would it be for them to match property values against people
then claim from only those in better properties, to improve the pay back percentage?
at work i have asked around and found that only people outside of social housing have been targeted!

A pretty good scam if you ask me. Anyone with so much as good wordy English and is tech minded could sniff for IP's in Student flats/old persons residential areas and send threatening letters demanding sums of money. Those too afraid to take the matters to court would likely pay straight up.

I think I've found a new career path.

I'd be interested to know how many recipients of these letters are guilty and how many are innocent. There are definite cases of DL accusing both categories, but the proportions are unclear...

This is getting more and more ridiculous.

I heard on the radio the other day that now porn companies are targeting people for sharing (it was pretty explicit about sharing and not just downloading) their movies. I assume they are deploying a similar tactic to that of these guys, and being porn they are hoping people will be too embarrassed to fight it.

I'd give anything to go to court over an allegation of stealing porn. It would make my life!

Just watched this, basically, they cannot prove you download or upload by IP address only, and in order to have proof, they physically have to take your HDD away from you and inspect it. But then to take personal property, don't you have to get a court order or whatever? Which I think by then most companies will just say "I CBA".

They can't prove it was you who personally downloaded and made available (by acting as a peer) the material, but they can determine that it was your internet connection that did so.
Who used the internet connection is another thing.
