4th Update, Front cut by water jet

Water, yeah! :eeek: At last I can use an industrial machine, this time a water-jet cutting machine, pretty awsome!
I decided by this because I only have one A01, only one try, I can't afford to fail. I can fail with dremel, also with a saw, industrial machines make perfect cuts, at least better than a dremel.

I measured the piece to make a DXF file describing the hole. I used QCad (GPL edition), a simple 2D CAD software, perfect for this job. I passed the files to AQUATALL guys and they find a reference point to align the piece to the machine. Then the machine starts to cut, and takes no more than 15 seconds to finish!

    Here the pics:

The pool is necessary because without it the water-jet reaches the ground and make a hole!

    5th Update, Front bezel materials

I get some new materials from my supplier to make the front bezel. A large alluminium piece, with 5mm thickness and a pair of plastic pieces. Pics explain what I want to do to put all together. Now I'm thinking how to bend this alluminium piece... :worried:

I remade a new 3D model according to the real pieces and front cut.

Of course, I have two, but unfinished, you need some part in particular?

Thanks to everyone who are waiting for updates. The guy that going to help me with the aluminium curve is on vacation! :hehe: I'm also preparing 3D models for new year. What you think about a VFD display on the lower front? and usb ports?

6th Update [18th Jan 2010] More waterjet work.

Hi! after a few weeks without updates I come back with some news.
More water-jet work, cutted some separator plastics and the alluminium piece. The plastic pieces need some countersink work in holes, edges also need sanding to remove burr. And then, the worst work is bend the alluminium bar.

This is the back, needs some sanding.

And this is the front, where machine shoots and enters the water+abrasive particules.

Here you can notice the difference between a rotative saw cut and a waterjet cut.

    Placing all togehter.

The first piece needs some rectification to fit well into the curve.

Finally I put a grill to see how it looks.

7th Update [20th Jan 2010] Sanding plastic pieces.

Hi, today I worked a bit, not much. I tried diferent sandpapers, with various grit to see which works best for this plastic.
Seems that ~280 grit is the best for future painting job. Primer paint will be necessary if finally I do that.
Also I started to rectify the plastic separator to fit well into the curve.

8th Update [22th Jan 2010] Still working on plastic separator.

Well, more sanding, this is really boring. This plastic isn't very good for hand-work. I will let ready for paint in other moment.
More, now plastic separator fits well, at same front level.

Ah!, also I lost the lens cap from the camera objective... in house

Absolutely stunning so far. What doesn't kill you sanding will make you stronger. Mod on my fellow modder.

9th Update [4th Feb 2010]Preparing front bezel, and countersinking holes

Yep, I'm back with a big update.
This time finally I can use heavy machinery (at least for me). The guys from workshop helped me with some procedures, for example using the lathe (I'm totally a newbie to operate it :waah:) and with the welding machine (dangerous, insurance will not cover me). I used a milling machine, is easy to use and not too dangerous, and a band sander (I say correctly?).

    Here the pics:

This is an iron bar, needs to be 26mm diameter to match the inner radius of the aluminum piece (13mm).

This lathe it's a bit old, but still useful today.

This sheet metal is welded to the table.

Now, the iron cilinders also will be welded.

The internal barbs can't be removed using the big machinery, needs some manual work.
