I did this the other day - launch the server with "hellworld=true" set in the server.properties file, then explore a bit till you get Hell chunks generated.
You can then restart the server in Hellworld=false mode, and the generated chunks will still be there. New chunks after that point will be generated as normal world.

I'm guessing the only problem with this is that while its in hellworld=true you get ghasts spawning everywhere in your map?

No, actually - I'm guessing they're not implemented correctly for SMP, as I haven't seen one yet. In fact, while I had hellworld set to true, I don't think I saw any mobs at all.

Are we fighting the same ghasts? They're just a bit of a nuisance in my opinion. They're so inaccurate and you can punch their fireballs back, and you don't take much damage from being in the blast radius of the fireball. Food is abundant in hell, too, so you can just heal back any damage you take.

Also a ghast will snuff it in 2 arrows, providing you hit it in the dangly bits.

Well, the server had locked up, so no save I'm afraid. Unsure whether or not Stickeh's auto-save feature has done it's job. Cross fingers chaps.

Hey Stickeh. I've been playing around with hey0 mod myself...

You should rely install the Daylight plugin

Can be en/disabled via /enableplugin Daylight or /disableplugin Daylight if you want normal day/night cycle. Verry usefull when players want to build a lot. Like i said, when they are done building, just disable the plugin en taadaa.. normal cycle. :D

Now the admins/mods dont have to type /time day anymore ;)

    Edit:

Oh and maybe the Bedrock Gap insurance too. Keeps players from falling through the map :)
