Sorry to be picky but how is it any different to AMD's naming system for the new 6000 series cards, thats messed up as well.

As I think I've said before on these issues who cares what they are called, look at the reviews and comparisons and find out which card fits your requirements. Names mean nothing......

Besides it might be from the same family as the 480 but it is way better so people buying the 580 arent exactly gonna be losing out are they.

Personally waiting for the GTX560 to see if it'd be a 386SP GF104 with some tweaks and called GF114...

my birthday is in 9 days.. I would have had someone buy it and pretend I didn't see if it did 60 fps in crysis- I don't think a single gpu will ever do that until the shrink..

38.5fps 4x aa at my res is not good enough and I'm for single gpu- only 5 fps faster than a 5870 that's been out for how long! really the only game out there that can't be played full up with the cards currently out.. does it really matter if your getting a 270 frames in call of juarez heheh

you know what I mean :D

AMD said they were realigning their naming scheme and they did make significant changes to the architecture. This 580 is really a 480 refined with Nvidia remaining conspicuously quiet for the launch.

Names DO mean something, consumers need them to make an appropriate decision when comparing various cards. Many I know who play games have no idea of the tech side they just want to play their games and are likely to be suckered by this type of marketing. And yes both red & green are guilty but green has been more egregious in recent times.

Where were the SLI/Crossfire comparisons? I have seen the 6870 CF rate very well in cost vs. frame rate to the 580. I would like to see 580 SLI numbers too.

    those are factory overclocks

"The core clock is 835 MHz, the shader clock 1670 MHz. Thanks to the fast GDDR5 memory, 1050 MHz (4200 MHz data rate)"

AMD reduced the price of the HD5970 in 100-110€... :O (now at 389€)

    I love competition...

But isn't that the same for the 4870 - 5870 - 6970 (or whatever they are calling it) ? The only difference between the 4870 and the 5870 was DX11 and a few natural progressions in design. You can't point the finger at Nvidia claiming that however true without doing the same towards AMD.

As for being suckers for marketing, the AMD marketing department is one of the worst for the "Look we've got something new out and it's the best out there at this moment!" However, when the comparisons are made, they tend to go rather quiet.

At this moment in time, the 580 IS the single card willy waver. Will it still be waving when the 6XXX(?) comes out, no one could possibly know that today.

Your general consumers don't have a clue what they are buying so numbers aren't really gonna help.

The people I know who have bought cards like the 9200 and AMD equivalents because they have been advertised as gaming cards just didn't have a clue. Naming schemes should make more sense but I don't think its the be all and end all and certainly no reason to run down a new release.

The point I was trying to make is someone has bought a 5870 and because they don't know better they go out and buy a 6870 thinking its gonna be better and are biterly disapointed, at least if someone has bought a 480 and then go buy a 580 they get what they actually expect.

Makes far more sense in my eyes.

P.S. if this turns into a pointless flame war I'll be off like a shot cos there nothing more lame than that.

I'm delighted this card has turned up trumps. I've flogged my 5870's and have a healthy bank balance waiting for this years gpus. I was focused on the 6990 or two 6970's but this card has really thrown a curve ball. All that tessellation/AA ability means super sweet graphics without xfire or dual gpu driver hits. In the real world this card could win as ur not stuck waiting for driver updates to unleash the beast compared to a 6990 and while the 6970 may have more horsys this card could have more torque. AMD better spill the beans soon or this performance whore might be rubbing up against a 580... and just think of the factory oc'd models to come

Last year we got excited cos the 5870 just pipped the 4980x2, now nvidia have pretty much pipped the 5970. This was the most I was expecting from the 6970. Nvidia could now pinch it on their tesselation/AA performance at decent resolutions... Even tho its not everyones cupán tae, for me it would also be nice to have physx without using cracks

Any chance of some GPGPU / folding@home benchmarks?, it would be interesting to see if Nvidia have sacrificed GPGPU performance to boost gaming FPS, as some people have rumoured.

    Where are the Cyrsis benchmarks?

    ...I'll get my coat :p

Hard to say AMD has a "series" released, two cards isn't exactly much more than Nvidia's one, particularly when those two are middle end and the flagship card is still missing.

There is actually quite a lot of architectural changes between the 5xxx series and the 6xxx series. You've fallen for the uninformed gossip and confusion over the 5770/6870 generational numbering change.

Whereas, the GTX580/GF110 really is a slightly refined GTX480/GF100. Basically it is the GF100 cleaned up for the TSMC 40nm process and benefiting from a more mature process.

According to the article, there are are only minor changes made to the core, namely texture filtering (the same as the GF104 or GTX460) and the tessellator. In other words, the only tangible architectural performance change Nvidia bought from the GF104 was the texture filtering. Everything else is the same as the GF100.

    So, in summary:
    * Same 40nm process with the same size die and same number of transistors
    * Same memory bus width and frame buffer
    * Same 512 shaders (only now all are unlocked)
    * Same 48 ROPS
    * 64 Texture units instead of 60
    * Improved tessellator (which will probably make little difference to the user)
    * Bump in clock speed to 772MHz (which again, is similar to their original clock target which Nvidia missed a year ago!)
    * Slight bump in memory speed.

None of these, individually or in their entirety, justify a generational nomenclature bump. Not even when Nvidia did a process shrink on an architecture did they jump to a new generation (7800GTX->7900GTX, 8800GTX->8800GT, GTX280->GTX285).

All they did was fix up their power arrangements and slightly tweak the texture filtering. There were more architectural changes GF100->GF104 than GF100->GF110.
And yet here we have the brand new GTX580!
Why do I think this has more to do with the 68xx/69xx making Nvidia products look old (I'm talking about perception)? If there were no 68xx/69xx, this would have been the GTX485.
Given that AMD is releasing a new generation, I can't wait for more Nvidia product renaming in the near future in order to make their products look current.

It really is beginning to grind my balls!

It looks like its going to be an interesting Christmas period for us enthusiasts provided AMD get their flagship card out on time.

I've never been a big fan of ATi brand cards, possibly rooted from a few years ago when Nvidia just couldnt be caught, price and power wise.

It should be good to see a good fight between these two again. Hopefully it will result in some decent priced cards - possibly a price war? (here's hoping!)

Might have to take the plunge and purchase one of the top cards then… not done that since the days 3dfx were still around.
