    The tarball extractors are revolting!

Hmm.. Okay, cool. I always thought they were, meh, you learn soemthing new everyday.

I still say we all go SPARC though. The leading edge technology, shortly they should be releasing the 600MHz chip!

But I can't wait for AMD to release the ClawHammer chips... But that's just their project name, when their released their gonna rename them to the Opteron or soemthing like that, I cna't quite remember. AMD make great chips, but they need to hire a new person to come up with names.... Intel have cool names (mostly) but most of AMDs names are rather lacking in the cool area in my opinion.

    Ah well.....:D

Have (or will soon) a 1GHz chip. Hz aren't exactly a good way to measure a chips performance.

Opteron will be the Server level chip (4+ cpu systems), the Athlon name will continue as the desktop/workstation chip (1-2 cpu systems, slightly watered down version of the Opteron).

Hrm. Pentium, P-Pro, P-2, P-3 (or !!! if you prefer) and P-4. Celeron and Itanic. You don't seriously think those are good names, do you? I'll admit, I think Opteron is a dumb name.

Oops about teh SPARC... I've been out of the loop for some time..... But I was mostly making reference to how while SPARC is powerful, it just isn't up to the degree the more popular ones have, which for most people would be the one thing keeping them from using them. Personally I wouldn't mind having a SPARC based system, just so I could be different.

No they aren't the greatest, the Pentium isn't bad, and Itanic is kinda catchy, but compared to AMD's naming system. The opteron sounds really dumb, the Duron is feh, it's down there with Celeron, Athlon is pretty good (with Thunderbird being a good one) but XP/Thoroughbred? I'm sorry but both of those sound terrible to me. I realize these are Athlons too, but they are the individual names. MP is mostly just a funcitonal name, I forget, does it ahve another name like the XP? And then there's Xeon, that sounds cool.

Oh well I'm an AMD boy and that's how it's gonna be for now no matter how silly the chips get named :D

In news today, AMD released nformation on their new processor, as seen here.

I'm fairly sure that there won't be a Pentium 5. Reason being that it would be shortened to P5, but P5 was already used to describe the original Pentiums (60MHz - 266MHz with MMX). P6 was the pentium pro architecture, which lived on through Pentium II and III, reaching over 10 times its original speed (133 debut, 1400MHz final), which was a very impressive run.

Anyone bet on the new name being "Sextium"?:naughty:

Seriously though, AMD's names aren't bad. Maybe slightly marketing-cheesy (Duron => Durability, Athlon => Athleticism, Opteron => Optimisation), but better than the wildly inventive 8086, 80286, 80386, 80486, Pentium (someone else got to "586" first), Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium 4, Pentium ZZZzzz.

I personally vote for all CPUs being known by development codenames. That way, anyone getting confused only has themselves to blame. Plus, more people might know what I was talking about when blabbering about Mendocinos, Klamaths, Deschutes, Tualatins, Spitfires, Morgans and Mckinleys (answers on an epostcard).

AMD names aren't bad? WTF? Someone here must've missed the 9-12 months with the Athlon XP (cheap marketing ploy, Xtra Performance my hairy yellow butt) and that whole POS PR system.

As for Itanic being catchy, thats not the real name. That is the nickname being similar to Titanic. The real name is Itanium. I think thats worse than anything AMD has come up with. Some of Intel's codenames are good though. I still think the K8 should have stuck with SledgeHammer and ClawHammer.

Supposedly the XP was thought of before MS publicly announced their POS XP. As for the PR system, it is no worse than the POS MHz myth.

The code names are always cooler.

Here at AMD I often forget the real world names,
We just call it, TBird, K7, Clawhammer, Sledgehammer, K8
    I seriously forgot Opteron.
(Also you need to think of how names translate too, sledgehammer in another language may mean sludgehammer)

But I agree, the code names are much better.

Yeah I know, I mean think about it, you ahve the choice between to chips, they are the same price, and the same speed (let's imagine for a moment they are exactly the same okay?) and one is called Itanium, and the other is called ClawHammer.

Okay, I dare someone to say they'd choose the one called Itanium. I mean, most people (read: computer geeks with no lives) would much rather boast about their new ClawHammer machine.....

Also the fact that in real life the ClawHammer would be faster...... :D

Whypick- You exemplify why the Quantispeed rating system is necessary. If AMD didn't use it, 95% of the computer buying public would see "AMD AthlonXP 2250MHz" or "Intel Pentium 4 2800MHz", and they will assume that the P4 is the more powerful processor because it runs at a higher clock rate. This is not the case, and since trying to educate the computer buying public of this is an impossible task, AMD put out a rating system which fairly accurately compares the performance of their processors to the P4.

    here's what's in my house:

    1Ghz TBird @ 1.4Ghz (mine)
Duron 800 (mine - used as DHCP server for big LAN's)
    Duron 650 (dad's - freebie from work :D )
    Athlon (slot a) 500 (my little bro's)
er...think we even have some Intel chips kicking about somewhere (386, 486).

Oh, and that's just reminded me:
the other day I got really bored and decided to trash our old system (and by old, I mean OLD - 8086 @ 5Mhz, 640kb RAM, 10Mb HDD, 256k video RAM etc etc) and to my surprise I found AMD and Intel chips on the mobo...not likely to see that happen again soon!
AND, the fan in the PSU was a Papst - they've been going a while then?

man, that 10Mb HDD makes me laugh - it's about twice the size of a standard PSU!! mind you, the huge platters make very good coasters for large coffee cups!

    Matt

EDIT - and as for CPU names, Athlon sounds cool, but Thunderbird just makes me think of Gerry Anderson puppets called Virgil, Brains and Scott! /EDIT

I'm not surprised that you found AMD chips on that old mobo. AMD are one of the biggest manufacturers of PLAs in the world. Remember that cpus and chipsets aren't necessarily the core business (pun intended) for the chip manufacturers, but they also produce a lot of other chips found in all sorts of everyday devices (and compete with philips, TI, etc in this market). Of course, AMD and intel are very focused on the PC market right now, because it is lucrative.

Papst and other manufacturers you've only heard of more recently have often been going longer than you think, sometimes in surprising ways.

For example, given the rivalry between them now, who'd think that nikon started out by making lenses for canon cameras?

I used to hate AMD back in the K6-2 days. I was Intel all the way until the Athlons came out, my vote from then on went to AMD!!!

    My current systems :

AMD 1.4 thunderbird - main system
Intel P4 1.4 - guest lan machine + seti cruncher
Intel P3 933 - on loan to brother atm
    Intel P3 866 - mp3 pc + seti cruncher
Intel P200mmx - used for those rulin old games :)

Ok too many Intel's there, but I've either had them for ages or got them for free. My next system will be another AMD when the new cpu's get released

I was a pretty early adopter of AMD chips, I still have a working AMD 5x86-133 system sitting over there.

Wow... what a blast from the past...

I guess I may as well put in my vote... I used to be AMD, but recently, I've swapped to Intel (buying my P4 in about a week).

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: AMD! AMD! AMD!

Me hopes intel is as generous there is one not 6 or 7 miles from my house, and a motorola is just across the way. *me thinks is time to change interests back to electronics :D *

/me pretty sure that I have voted in a similar thread before.... :eyebrow:

    /edit: Systems-

    Intel P4 2800MHz on a P4G8X Deluexe.
    AMD-Athlon 1800@1.53GHz on a Asus A7N266
    AMD-Athlon 2400@2.0GHz ona Epox Nforce 2 333fsb

the most stable has been the Epox Nforce combo but the outright fastest is the Intel. ;)
