    The Secretary of State.

But it is subject to a legal dispute over who has the authority to call a Border Poll:

    https://www.irishnews.com/news/nort...tory-over-united-ireland-border-poll-1277425/

In June this year he lost the case in a court in Belfast:
    https://www.irishnews.com/news/nort...s-bid-to-force-policy-on-border-poll-1368440/

But he plans to appeal, so who will have the authority in the future remains to be seen....

The DUP is one of the two biggest parties in NI, in the last election for the NI government they got around 28%, however the NI government works differently from the UK government because the NI government is based on a power sharing agreement, so the DUP is basically forced to work together with Sinn Fein and that power sharing agreement has been in limbo for over a year now leaving NI with no government (the place is being run by the Civil Service).

The election for the UK government is separate, but again the same two parties are the big ones in NI, however since Sinn Fein refuses to take seats in Westminster that means the only political party from NI that is part of the UK government is the DUP.
Traditionally that didn't really matter since the number of MPs they get is small any way. However in the last election for the UK government the Tories didn't do well enough, so they needed to forge an alliance with someone and given how much of a mess the Tories are currently making no one really sees a chance of the Tories winning any election on their own in the near future.

    Big problem.

I was going to hang on until Zen2 for an upgrade but that will probably be after we leave.

Perhaps sooner rather than later would be prudent.

UK can't afford to overlook Africa --Maybot

...because why break the habit of centuries?

'The UK wants to be the biggest investor in Africa'

...I think the Chinese and possibly the Russians hae already beaten us to that one.

We can invest as much as we like but Africans are'nt going to be buying what we're selling, not when the average GDP per capita is around $1.7k per year, it's the same for the commonwealth countries that many leave supporters said we could sell to.

At least the Chinese have been building infrastructure iirc, something Africa wants/could actually do with.

The UK mainly sends gap year students to take selfies in an oxfam t-shirt next to some skinny kids.

I wonder how this new Africa thing is playing with leave supporters, wasn't one of the things that irked them the fact that we send loads of money to the EU who in turn use it to support poorer member state?

And now we've signed up to send loads of money to support a poorer state just so we can trade with them.

More along the lines that they didn't like the money we sent to the EU being handed over to the likes of Poland and Hungary.

They hate the thought of 'their' money being [taken in tax, and] spent on those less deserving [i.e. someone that's not them].

As someone from the NE - Govt money rarely make it this far up the A1, and what does tends to keep going up and into Scotland.

Predicted reaction of a leave voter:
"Those pesky black people will never fit in, they don't even paint their skin orange".

It won't come this far up the A1 at all... as there'll be no scotland for the govt money to continue on to because there'll probably be another indy ref.

Yeah in the NE there are plenty of signs around re things left right and centre being funded by the EU.

As an area that was pretty leavey it'll be interesting to see how they feel when the funding goes. It seems to be a bermuda triangle when it comes to Westminster.

Even Osborne's Northern Powerhouse bollocks was a good 100+ miles south of here...

It's not even a case of they think 'The North' stops at Hadrians Wall, they think the North stops at Leeds. I'm sure they think anything north of leeds or york is Scotland and thus not their problem.
