Here, let me add this. The GTX 970, hailed by many as the best Nvidia bargain ever released in 2014. It cost £330. More than the 7700XT, yet still they complain.
4060 - marginally faster in some, but not all scenarios than it's equivalently named predecessor smaller/lower tier die than predecessor [GA104 -> AD107] more efficient lower msrp than predecessor, for what little that mattered community consensus: nvidia are robbing bastards, **** Jensen. 7800XT marginally faster in some, but not all scenarios than it's predecessor smaller/lower tier die than predecessor [navi 21 -> navi 32] more efficient lower msrp than predecessor, for what little that mattered community consensus: amd are the bestest, all hail Dr Su! nvidia have been bending the space over a barrel for so long that people are falling over each other to convince themselves this is some spectacular consumer win. And whilst AMD didn't completely **** themselves for a change, It's not. It's a x700 tier card with a price bump. in the same sense the 4060 was a xx50 tier card with a price bump. This card is, at best, 'meh'. It just highlights the sorry state of things that 'meh' or 'not actively terrible' gets hailed as a win.
7800XT Does look like a very decent card. Was hoping it was going to be a no-brainer upgrade from the 3070 i have ATM .. and although it is a decent upgrade im on the fence. Perhaps it will drive the cost of a used 6800XT to £350 ish mark? If so then im better off buying one of those.
I would wait a while. Mostly because only one reviewer noticed two things that were very important. And hilariously it was Linus. Firstly the drivers are bad. The 77 is acting like a 8gb card with lots of bsods. Secondly and potentially far more important is the fact the 78 and 77 have acceleration hardware the 68 does not. Clearly it isn’t doing anything. Yet. What’s it for? Maybe frame gen? Is that why they haven’t launched fsr3 yet? Basically if that theory is true then the 78 and 77 could absolutely demolish the 68 when it does come out. Which may explain why it’s not coming out yet because there are still loads of 68 and 6950 left to be sold. So people like GN could actually be playing right into AMDs hands. And that is why I would either buy the 78 @479 or wait. Because it could be a shot in the foot to buy a 68 now.
Absolutely . We should always wait for such things but you know what we're all like . I do need to upgrade the 3070 at some point. And although it shouldnt ..the 3070 feels like a bit of a dog in 2023.
It’s also another reason why you shouldn’t base your purchasing decisions solely on a single review from a single source. I do generally tend to give GN’s reviews a bit more weight because they provide so much more data than many others do, but I’m not a fanboy who thinks that TechJesusSteve’s word is law. Doesn’t matter whether it’s written reviews or video reviews: seek a range of opinions.
They are the only ones saying don't buy it buy a 6800XT. Which is very naïve, especially after their little spat recently. Even more so because they are claiming to be some sort of authority, yet could lead people into buying something that may not be anywhere near as good with this new tech. I mean, I have no idea if it will make a difference. None. Then again, unless he has inside info neither does he. Whilst yes, AMD are going to make it work on their cards back to the 5700 and a lot of old Nvidia that doesn't mean they are completely daft and will scupper their own cards. As such it may be like Nvidia at first. "Sure, you can run the Star Wars RT demo on non RT cards but 1fps!". I doubt it will be as harsh as that, but I just have a feeling there will be a big incentive to buy a 7000 series card because of it. Unless of course you don't care and want native unhampered raw power. In which case the £609 6950XT with Starfield and a pair of light filter glasses from Scan is the king of the upper mid range.
Which is why I said a range of opinions is always better I followed this nonsense a lot, purely because it set so many feathers flying among fanbois. It was kind of amusing to see the mental gymnastics that fans of both companies deployed in various Reddit threads I wrote a lot more initially, but this kind of drama is all so much piss in the wind at the end of the day. I don't think GN ever claimed to be an authority, even by implication, but at the same time they didn't need to put out a negative video and then double-down on it. All they had to respond with was re-stating the kind of stuff they've talked about in the past: this is how we handle reviews, this is our sponsor ethics statement, this is what we do when we find out about mistakes, blah, blah, blah.... Initially it seemed like it might have done some good for LMG when they suspended production for a while, but it doesn't seem to have stopped their biggest problem and the thing that staff complain about the most: the relentless production schedule and the sheer number of videos they post across their various channels. So, in the end... eh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. You still come back to the same thing: don't trust the first review you watch or read, go look up a bunch of them . (btw, none of this is a criticism or a dig at you @Vault-Tec - not in the slightest)
Well the irony is that a few days later GN did a test where they had the 7900 XT and the 7900XTX. And said both had 24gb VRAM on the chart. No mention of this during the video, which was what he said Linus needed to do.
I agree , no one should be taken for gospel. Steve does provide thorough testing though. If i was to say i was a fan of anyone then the benches from HUB is usually my go to , subscribed to the channel regardless and watch pretty much all content. Their straight up guys from where im sitting.
That is kinda misrepresenting the situation. Burke stated in the initial LTT video that "ALL of us make errors but the numbers made by LTT is huge" and went on to say they picked a selection of LTT videos at random and found factual errors is almost every one. Practically every LTT review had factual errors. It is unfair to cherry pick one and throw up whataboutisms.
Oh I know, I was just being super duper picky Rumours abound from Digital Foundry and MLID (belmet) that Nvidia are under funding their gaming driver sector in favour of R&D for AI.
See Scan are price gouging the only 7800XT in stock. https://www.scan.co.uk/products/asu...b-gddr6-raytracing-graphics-card-3840-streams its only a couple of hundred quid overpriced ...
That's Asus tax, not 7800XT gouging. Scan were actually the cheapest for the 7800XT, with a couple of decent cards being available for £479. OCUK are more expensive for reasons.
musical chairs afoot? Herkelman out at AMD Tweet— Twitter API (@user) date Shrout out at Intel Tweet— Twitter API (@user) date
Maybe….. I will always remember Shrout for outing AMD on Crossfire. Wonder if they hold any resentment? Time will tell I guess.
France seems to do that kinda thing all the time... remains to be seen what, if anything comes of it...
France alone probably won't have much power against Nvidia, but the EU certainly will... if it gets that far...
