You are the iceman of this section! (For now). Maybe we should change this thread to "Show your gear". What tripod is that? And in particular, what "head" is that? It's huge. I'm assuming you are a photographer?
Tripod is a Bogen/Manfrotto 3011 Head is a Bogen/Manfrotto 3263 and the other head off to the side is a 322RC2 I'm actually a photography student. Not quite old enough to be a pro photographer as I'm only 18.
/me waits for Pookey to arrive All I have right now for my 400D is the kit 18-55, but I'll probably add to that sometime soon.
How do you like that 322RC2 ? It looks very practical in use.. but maybe it isn't? Can it hold a heavy camera in place? (long heavy lens?). Awesome gear for a student!
It can hold probably about 15 pounds on a calm day. If the wind is blowing and your taking extended exposures with a large lens, then you'll need a long lens support. They don't cost all that much. The 3263 is definitely my preferred head. I can really dial in the angle I want down to fractions of degrees. Don't get me wrong, though, the 322RC2 is still a great head.
Drove about 200km today to grab this second hand, though looks spanking unused, tripod and head; Whaddya you guys think i paid for these winner gets a virtual cookie. Manfrotto Carbon Tripod 055MF3 Gitzo G1377M center-ballhead
Okay, this thread (read: padrejones) is really making me and my P+S cry. I really need a job again... I want one of the new Canon DR XTis (400D?).
I had that passion about photos back in my late 20's i had an old Nikon FM with a couple of general purpose lens and loved it. Lately i got back into it and got myself a Canon S2-IS (Pic 1) which i think is a good deal for what it does, but i underestimated my dusty passion reemerging. Since i got the canon, all i can think of is getting a new Nikon D-80. (pic 2) which is a bit more expensive but it would fit better with what i currently feel about taking pictures right now. Just looking at you guys stuff makes me drewl of envy loll. Pic 2
The D80 is a fantastic camera. But I feel more attracted to the Canon-lenses. They have the 17-40 F4 L and 70-200 F4 L, wich are bouth fantastic value-lenses. Nikon, sadly, does not have equivalents to those lenses. There F2.8 lenses are also a tad bit more expensive then the Canon alternatives. The D80 body is also a bit more expensive then the 400D body.. but then you only get one LCD. The D80 is amazing though, you get a very good kitlens (unlike the 350/400D) wich does not require a upgrade for alot of people. So if you just want the kitles + a kit-like tele, then the D80 is really a very good choice. Damn.. I'm olmost convincing myself to go D80..
I have a question tough about the D-80 for you pros lol. What do you guys think of the kits we see like on ebay? Should someone go for the real nikon thing, or is the sigma kit good enough compared to the AF (lower grade) nikon lenses in this kit? And even if i dont go for kits, are the nikon lenses better at this level ? I really dont think i will ever spend like $5000 for a zoom Thanx Nikon http://cgi.ebay.ca/Nikon-D80-Digita...7QQihZ003QQcategoryZ43456QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Sigma http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-Nikon-D80-Di...5QQihZ020QQcategoryZ43456QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Best thing to do is start with a cheap basic zoom lens. Then think about how much you want to spend on lenses. Next you have to play alot with the zoomlens and find out what range and F-stop you need. Then comes the hardest part, reading reviews on all the lenses that fit your needs. Keep this in mind: Every lens is a compensation between optical quality, build quality, sharpness, max f, range (zoom), price. Spend 90% of your budget on the lens you will use 90% of the time. Then go and make choices. And don't forget, have fun! L
Agreed with Lovah... first stick with the lens that comes with a basic kit and see what you need. For me, I don't have anything that zooms farther than 50mm; some people think that's odd and when they buy lenses that go upwards of 200mm and extreme telephotos, but I figured early on that I tend to stick to around 24mm when taking photos so my only 3 lenses I have are my 10-22mm for extreme wide angle, my 17-40mm for every day goodness and my 50mm prime for something longer. I didn't see the need for anything longer and wouldn't actively use anything longer but I wouldn't have known that without first playing with the basic kit lens. If I have gone ahead and bought a telephoto first, I would've wasted a lot of money.
Thanx Lovah, this will definitely stick with my when i walk in the store. "Spend 90% of your budget on the lens you will use 90% of the time." So i guess when i get that D-80 i'll try to get a good price on the 18-135 mm that comes with it and later on maybe one of those 70-300G for the birds lol. though it seems a bit too budget for that kind of lens?? what do you think, money well spent ? http://www.adorama.com/NK70300AFGB.html Thanx again
ok i'm sad now... all i have is a film SLR... the canon eos 50D or something which i can't even find on the internet time to get spending!!!
