Why is that a bad idea? I see nothing wrong in being taught how to shoot. We had shooting trips in school, and archery was taught on campus until demand dropped and they had to scratch the course.

 

It can obviously be a very bad idea, but done properly there's nothing wrong, I'd agree. I don't think it should be taught in schools, though it should be made available through schools. I also think students should have to wait until they reach a decent age, with parental consent and teacher sponsorship to assure maturity.

Then the teacher should be someone rational, calm and likely to downplay it all while focusing on safety. I've seen far to many gun courses where young students are made even more excited by it all because teachers say things like "this type of gun is popular among gangsters" or "alright Kids, now time for something really cool!"

Archery on the other hand? Go for it. Easier to put it in the right context, less feasible and more expensive for wrongful use outside of the school, similar purpose, lays a groundwork for later learning about other weapons. I effin love archery.

 

I used to carry a rifle around on school grounds regularly, I was in the shooting team

And Cadets.

We got strange looks when walking down the corridors holding SA80's... mainly from the young kids that couldn't join the cadets. Oh, if only we were actually able to have firefights with... blanks.... inside the building...
