MAKE A NEW LEMMINGS, YOU COWARDS. (For the Younger Generation: DMA Design was founded by David Jones in 1987, and its breakthrough hit was Lemmings in 1991. This brought in the money required to develop Grand Theft Auto, originally Race'n'Chase, which released in 1997. Gremlin Interactive (who you won't know either) bought DMA Design that same year when it saw what a hit Grand Theft Auto was, then Infogrames (same, and also not a typo, but they're wearing Atari's tanned hide these days and you'll have heard of Atari) bought Gremlin Interactive in 1999. Meanwhile US giant Take-Two Interactive bought up the corpse of Grand Theft Auto publisher BMG Interactive (yes, all these companies had "Interactive" in their names, it was the 90s) in 1998, and in doing so acquired the rights to Grand Theft Auto... because the games industry is weird like that. With the rights, Take-Two set up an in-house development label called Rockstar Games to basically make the same thing again. Then in 1999 Take-Two completed the get by acquiring the DMA Design assets from Infogrames, which had already got bored of it and was eyeing up Atari, but not before The Studio Formerly Known as DMA Design had shed a bunch of staff... many going to Rockstar Games. It then renamed DMA Design to Rockstar North, and put it in charge of making more money Grand Theft Auto because... well, it's easier than ripping it off outright, but it still meant that Grand Theft Auto was a Rockstar thing, and poor DMA Design's rather lovely logo was lost to the ages. All of this is to say, sod Grand Theft Auto, I WANT MORE LEMMINGS, and The Studio Formerly Known as DMA Design via Rockstar North via Rockstar Games via Take-Two Interactive is the only way I'm getting it. You read all this? Blimey, go have a biscuit to celebrate.)
'next Grand Theft Auto' place your bets: GTA Online 2 remake of past GTA Game GTA 6 GTA and RDR merge into something set in a 1920s chicago-a-like
and no, that buillshit f2p mobile game doesn't count EDIT: Also Put the originals on GOG you cowards...
Good grief - Gremlin Interactive. Who would ever forget Thing on a Spring and Gauntlet, and the Infogrames armadillo?
Mafia? So they have made an announcement for the announcement trailer of a game that wouldn't be out for a few years. I think I read somewhere GTA 5 was announced 2 years before it actually came out.
Yeah, IDGAF about GTA* - haven't really played it since VC and haven't enjoyed it since the old top-down games. I bought GTA IV but uninstalled it pretty quickly. I'd rather like a new Lemmings game too. *Did I mention I haven't seen The Lion King?
Not me, 'cos I have... hang on, let me pull it down from the shelves... A Gremlin in the Works, Mark Hardisty's exhaustive (and oft-updated, with a free PDF "expansion disk" download) two-volume history of the firm.
Infogrames, I remember them from back in the day when I would try new stuff , helped to develop my addiction to strategy games with North and South
I will never forget DMA Design thanks purely to the "Blood Money" intro being burned into my brain at a young age: "First, there was Menace... Now, Psygnosis presents, a DMA Design game... Blood money...." Well... That's the intro music I remember anyway... I just watched the Amiga version and it sounds... odd... to me. Obviously better quality, but just... feels wrong, 'cos it's not what I remember! Mark Hardisty did a talk at The Cave earlier this year. I'm a little behind on Neil's videos, but I tend to push these longer "interview" videos off for longer because they're... well... long.... Also yes: MAKE A NEW LEMMINGS, YOU COWARDS.
Never got to enjoy that m'self, 'cos I had the C64 version. Still have, in fact, hang on... 's a good game! (Also, I *love* having my stuff easier to get at now I'm in the new office. Well, most of it, at least.)
Interesting focus on social media culture, highly relevant and a gold mine for content but if it's a gameplay feature in any way I'm out
I'll pay attention again in a couple of years. Maybe they can squeeze in a cheeky PS5 upgrade for RDR2 in the meantime...
