And I'm not sure what other games to play. Currently I have this list:
    TF2, CS:S, War Rock, and Trackmania Nations(Forever)
    Unreal Tournement(Thanks to DXR)
    Gmod(Tranc3)
Counter Strike 2D with custom sprites >.>
    Worms(Thanks to /g/)
Any other games I should have? Preferably Free.

I'm also going to have Halo3, Gears of War, and CoD4.
Anything you want to know about my LAN parties? Just ask.

Used to have these all the time. Get yourself C&C3 and AOE2 man, a good lan isn't complete without an RTS.
    Plenty of snacks.
Lots of table space (and I mean a lot).

I'll look into those, and see if the people might want to play them.
I know how the snacks thing goes. I'm going to buy my snacks and drink in bulk this time.
As for table space, I used to use my Table Tennis table and another table, But i'm going to try to use these plastic-ish tables and set those up.

I am eventually going to get a proper set up for a 8/1 LAN in my basement.
    Chairs(8)-$160
    Tables(6)-$120
    Carpet-$60

I have my own Rec Room downstiars, and all I really need is a mini-fridge down here.
I might get a LAN server down here, but thats too far in the future. My 24port switch and moderate DSL( :( ) connection is enough for now.

    Also, Ensign Ricky

Actually on that lan server issue, it might actually be vital to have one. Whenever I do lans I usually get not as good pings as i should be getting, generally 8-30. it might just be a crappy router but my suspicions are that it's the PCs running as a server and a game.
So if you're going to be lanning frequently then get a cheapo server (if you do it frequently you don't need to be told this).

also take pictures and create a mascot.

our lan mascot used to be our national flag on the same wall every time and a computer case that exactly fitted the window of the bathroom.

edit: mascot as in meme in this case

if it goes longer than one day bring mattresses or sleeping bags.

    coffe!!!!!

We kinda do pictures. And I've never thought to do mascots.
I do an overnight thing here, and If/when we sleep, I have enough spare beds/couches/chairs. And we are Energy Drink people, But i get everybody to bring their own drinks.

I might do a server, But all I have laying around are spare pentium III's.
I am planning on getting a 1u or 2u Rackmount server in the future for media and such.

Wait! I have that Pentium 4 (2.6Ghz) laying around here somewhere.... I had forgotten about that. Thanks!
So what all should i need for this server? I have that p4, 384mb of ram, a few IDE hdd's laying around. And what should I install on it?

The respective stand alone servers for your games, check it all first because some of them are windows only.

I know the steam games are for windows or linux, but I will probably stick to XP due to ease of driver location and being able to fix it easily.
I'm not a tux noob, but i'm not an expert either.

As ramble said, get some RTS action going. Can't go wrong with pretty much any C&C game out there and AoEII is spectacular. The other week me and some friends spent 8 HOURS straight playing AoEII in my house, freakin amazin.

Also, I had an idea a while ago about Defcon, playing that game in a dark room using a projector is spectacular, that atmosphere it creates is simply amazing.

I think it would be epic fun to have two rooms set up like that and then have a 2 player match but instead of just 1 player on each side have a sort of "war council" with a small group on each side then play the game on the slowest setting. That would mean the 'council' could debate on which course of action to take, where to move fleets too, etc.

Funnily enough when I googled for Defcon LAN war room the 3rd result was a previous post from me about that idea on this forum!

Seems I'm the first person to have this idea

if you can put more ram into it then do it, even if you have to ask your guests to bring some ram.

Wow, that is a great idea!
I have the wallspace for it, and I might be able to get a projector.... hmm..

I have a gig of ram for it actually. I'll have to take it our of a computer when i find it.
    Edit: Added Worms

Projector and a couple of consoles always go down well IMO too, just for when you want something a bit more relaxing. Flatout is a must for a lan. Try UT with the bombing run mod...

    Well, I'll have 3x360's my Xbox, a PS2, and a N64.
I'm looking into flatout as well.
Trying to find a projector, but to no avail....

That would be really, really epic. We need to do this.

500mph - you wouldn't happen to be in the Seattle area, would you? I'm thirsting for some LAN action, and it sounds like our taste in games agrees.

As for the games themselves, a few really good games that everyone knows are all you really need - I've had very successful LAN parties where all we played was HALO PC, UT2k4, and AOE2.

    Defcon, yes, yes and yes.
I'd say don't bother with Battlefield, it's a pain to set up - especially BF2.
AOE will take you a long time, three hours is the minimum I've gotten.
    Worms is fun, good choice.
How about an old version of Half Life Deathmatch? Runs on any hardware and is great fun.
EDIT: Old now, but Aliens vs. Predator?
