How much money do you want, before you will consider giving any of your money away to charity? Is there a certain me:charity ratio, or an amount you are happy with? For example, if your earnings were as follows, how much would you be happy to give away? a) $10,000 pa b) $100,000 pa c) $200,000 pa d) $500,000 pa Or would you just rather keep it all to yourself, not bother giving any away to anyone, because they would probably just waste it, or because you never received charity, or because governments blow millions on total bs every year, etc.
I don't believe in charity, it's usually the government that ends up with most of the donations. So I give nothing.
I'd want to pay off my mortgage before donating to charity, however, i don't give a percentage of my wages away, but i do sponsor people for Race for Life and bits and pieces. Btw. im on £16k pa
everyone no matter what wage you are on donates to charity as it comes out of your TAX !! to be honest im ok with donating if i know where its going i.e. stuff like cancer research uk but dont like the idea of my money going abroad and getting "lost" in the system and put to an "alternative" use.
If I had a lot of money I would want to help out my family and friends first before sending anything to any charities and even then it would be UK based charities. I think we need to sort out the problems we have in our own country before we try and sort out everywhere else. I'm only on 21,000 pa and I try and help people I know out where I can
I earn enough to contribute £50 a month to Help4Heroes over here in the UK. I have the world "Selfless" tattoo'd on my arm... go figure.
I give a few quid a month to each of Candis (provide asthma care & nurses), Cancer Research, British Red Cross and Action Aid. It's only about a tenner, but it's better than nothing. I don't think the OP's question is worded very well though, is it truly 'greedy' to want to keep the money you earn after tax and NI etc? I'd say it's more a question of how generous you are after that.
The question you should be asking is: what % of your donation to a charity actually ends up helping. For expample: if I run a charity or a non profit fundraiser and my overhead costs, including my salary, comes out to $900,000; only after I cover my costs do fund actually get go to the charity. So a 1.2 million dollar fundraiser only nets $300,000. This is why I don't donate, because no charities are willing to publish their costs and how much of what they raise is actually going to a good deed, rather then someone's 'salary and overhead'. So my answer is: I'll spend however much, where ever I know it actually gets used. As for my greediness: I'm ok with me being mildly greedy.
After necessity is taken care of I make on the spot judgement of how much I 'need' (basicly safety net money and to pay for something I may or may not want). I don't make regular donations however I do often make donations to certain charities of which the amount donated varies drastically each time, I also contribute at least once a year to charity events and fundraisers, the most recent was £3k raised for Cancer Research UK iirc.
I earn about £6000 a year. Taking uni tuition fees and general cost of living, I'm struggling to keep my own head above water. However, whilst I am unable to donate, I do partake in charity fundraising events, or get sponsorship for running half marathons. Once I'm a qualified teacher, I'd gladly make donations, or use holidays to take part in sponsored events. Getting children involved is a lot easier than getting adults involved. They haven't been disenchanted by the levels of greed we all see daily, and they genuinely seem excited by it.
It's somewhat naive and short-sighted to think that 100% of your donation should go to actual 'charity work'. For charities that rely solely on public donations, that is the only way those salaries and overheads are going to get paid. If no one pays for them, then the actual 'charity work' doesn't get done at all.
I would have to have an insane amount of money before I would start donating to random charities. The money given often get lost in administration and/or corruption, so I won't bother. The government give away enough of my tax money to crap like that. If I had lots of money I would rather pick out some people myself and help them. I'm more for caring about the people around me that some random people far away. If any of my friends or family need help, I help if I can. I think that's more important. As of now there is only thing I do is to buy the boxes of chocolate the local animal shelter sell before Christmas. They have their shelter right where I work, so they stop by to sell. I really like animals, so I have no problem supporting them. (I never stop by the shelter, though. I'd just end up taking one of their cats with me home...)
I don't have enough to keep myself let alone charitys although if i did have enough i would love to donate Im not a greedy person if i have money that i don't need why not give it to someone who could really benefit from it Thing is in most cases i just don't think the money gets were i want it to go
i donate to the dogs trust and the pdsa every month and have done for the past couple of years (even when I have been unemployed) these charities are very dear to me and i will continue to support them for as long as i can regardless of what i earn. Of course if I had a larger salary i would donate more.
I work on the principle that the path between your donation and the needy recipient should be as short as possible. Cut out the middle man: buy the Big Issue, help out at a shelter, donate on-line rather than to a door-to-door signature collector working on commission.
I don't think greedy is the right choice of words really. I have a pretty poor wage, funnily enough from working for a charity, so I don't get much spare to give but usually I save it up for a couple of months and distribute whatever I've collected quarterly. As for how much money I give to charities; things like RSPCA, Help4Heroes, Children in Need and so on, I don't generally do any of those pay monthly systems but when they do local events I sometimes pop along and put in a little money to support their cause. Most of my charity support goes to the odd local charity group from time to time by either dropping some money into one of their offices or doing some volunteering, generally I support ones that run activities for people in the area. Soon I'll be supporting on the the local parish council charities as well by renting out a village hall a day a week off them. That'll be split by me and a few others for our new games club. That'll probably mean my donations to other charities will drop a bit, but I'd still do the bit of volunteering here and there.
I don't give anything at the moment. Except coppers from change to boxes in shops. I did however volunteer 2 shift a week (1 day) at my local Oxfam Music shop for 6 months+ before I moved when I found myself with a bit more free time on my hands. When I was a bit younger and had less pressing things to spend things on, I used to regularly give donations to volunteers collecting in the street but I don't even do that now. If I won the lottery, sure I'd give away a portion to various charities...
Everyone say's that... but after the new house, a new car or two, a holiday, looking after your family and friends.... can't forget the new pc's, tv's and furniture in the new house either!!! ....oh wait... there's like bugger all left for charity now, whoops And that's just the greed part... we haven't got into wanting to control how our donations are used yet! I respect those of you that regularly donate to charity, i'm just too greedy and too much of a control freak. I'll give a couple of bucks to kids that are selling chocolate, and drop a bit of change in the tins people shake at traffic lights, but that's about it. I also use controlling arguments to justify my actions, such as administrations eating up donations, the recipients not putting the money to good use, and greedy ones like why give the money away to total strangers!? This had lead to think about giving money to family, friends... but the again I find myself thinking what if they just waste the money? Can't I have a say? I could offer the money conditionally perhaps? If I was a greedy, and had kept the money, then I could have wasted it on myself or my own immediate family! It's like if you make a significant donation, you want to see it put to good use. You want to see something for your money... sort of like purchasing something... It's really annoying to give away thousands in goods or interest free loans to friends/family, just to see them splurge the money you've saved them, not take care of what you've given them, and worst of all is seeing them spoil themselves with crap instead of paying you back asap Once a girl on the street asked me for a couple of bucks... and she looked so helpless and sweet as I pulled out my wallet, I asked her what she was going to do with the money... I was expecting her to say food and shelter, and I was trying to decide how much to give her... but then she goes and tells me about the drugs she wants to buy from the chemist I was like "WTF?!?!? GTFO!!!!!" Cos damn, it's like if I give you some money, I own you biatch! You do what I say you should be doing!!!!
If I win the lottery my partner has insisted I give him half, he reckons i'd end up giving it all away otherwise.
That's definitely the correct decision, important matters such as money can't be left solely in the hands of women!
