qft. but it can be cool for following non basement-dwellers. john hodgman has a very funny twitter page.
I just do not see the point of twitter at all but it seems to be the trendy thing at the moment as its constantly mentioned on TV & radio. Most of us live uninteresting lives so why document your daily grind to the world? Based on the people here who asked to be added after they have added something its just ego masturbation imo.
Here is a little presentation from the creator of twitter explaining what it comes from and what it has become etc. http://www.ted.com/talks/evan_williams_on_listening_to_twitter_users.html
http://twitter.com/toolguyd I recently fell ill with the Twitter bug. I've been finding it to be incredibly useful, actually.
I can understand following people who are vaugely interesting (e.g. Barack Obama or Stephen Fry, most subscribed twitter feeds respectively), but following anyone else, or if anyone follows you? Can't see it being remotely interesting.
Retailers are now jumping on the bandwagon as well. Some are offering twitter-follower-only coupons and promos, and others offer a way to talk to people and representatives that one would normally not have access to. Other places are treating twitter as an RSS feeding field, and spew nothing but auto-updates. I don't mean bit-tech, I mean a small time tech site that I found interesting that seems to be spamming several dozen tweeted links per day in batches of 10 or so. I read a NY Times piece yesterday. A small winery's owner paid $15,000 for print advertising to promote a new free shipping offer and received 200 new customers. He paid $7500 for a billboard and received 300 new customers. He posted the promo info on Twitter and attracted 1800 new customers. Article Link Twitter is evolving and is now often called a micro-blogging system.
Does anyone else really dislike Facebook's new Twitter-style interface? http://twitter.com/alexwilks88
Just for the people who doubt Twitter's usefulness, I'll say that 100% of the business (yes, every single freelance job) I've received in the last six+ months has come from Twitter. It's allowed me to get involved in at least two ventures that, if all goes well, could be my ticket to millionaire by 25. Plus getting jQuery tips directly from the guys who wrote it is always awesome.
I use it purely to keep up to date with all my workmates. Pretty much all of us use it and it's great for organizing outings, CoD4 sessions... Stupid in-jokes etc.
I read one just to see what it was like: pointless drivel. Nothing against it like, but I'll never read one again.
I blog. I don't circle-jerk. Check it out - http://toolguyd.com, and prior to that I wrote for another tool blog. Where's the narcissism? What, a blog, or a twitter feed? If you don't look for something specific, pointless drivel is all you'll get. Look for something more meaningful, and you may find something more worthwhile. Twitter is a lot like the first post of a forum thread. Some may be interesting, some might be useless, and some might be a bit of both. What would happen if everyone dumped bit-tech, or any other forum after finding a crappy thread? It's not twitter's fault that it hosts many spammy twits.
I was referring to twitter, I've actually found some good content on some blogs. But the spammy twits ruin it for me; it's like youtube comments
So what do you guys write on twitter? ---"I just took the biggest crap of my life" "Really? Thats awesome!!" "Congrats!"
@Stuey, I'll happily admit that your blog is not narcissistic in the slightest. In fact, it seems like a good use of space, which is rare on the internet The thing is, you're in a tiny minority. Have you ever traversed *shudder* LiveJournal? THAT is blogging at its worst. And it's horrible. I suppose it comes down to whether you've got (a) a gigantic ego complex and/or (b) something worth saying. If you've got (b) but not (a) (as you seem to), you result in a decent blog that's worth reading. But 98% of the population of the Western world has (a) and no (b).
