I used to watch LTT, mainly for the daft stuff - but I unsubbed after the jokey non-apology video and GN's exposé and then the Madison abuse thing. Did they ever produce any findings from the promised third party investigation? I doubt it, because it reads like upper/mid management were the culprits, but I thought I'd ask. Still watch GN, Paul, Hub, Buildzoid and Roman, among others.
I did used to watch LTT, never subbed but would end up watching through the algorithm, but I don't anymore. The Madison/Suop thing was the final straw. The rest can be seen as an unfortunate set of circumstances and a megalomaniac, but this is pure malice.
Normally using your search engine of choice to look for "Gareth Halfacree $DEVICE" if its anything SBC / rpi / electronics related.
Well of course trusting Gareth’s opinion is a given, but sadly he doesn’t review CPUs or GPUs I’m gonna be honest, I had completely forgotten that whole debacle. (Not because I think it’s insignificant or unimportant, but because that’s just how my brain works.)
By default I doubt unsubstantiated allegations made by disgruntled ex-employees. Nothing's surfaced about it. It's possible they reached some kind of non-disclosure settlement behind closed doors, though, of course. That aside, I think this thread has been rather unkind to the Youtube tech review crowd. By and large, they (GN, JTC and LTT) produce very high quality and well resesarched content; the recent dip in LTT's quality represents a blip affecting about 1% of all the content they ever made. Most of it is very rigorous and they post huge amounts of data, stats and methodology. GN is particularly good for this. They're just doing what other tech journos like Bit-Tech, Tom's Hardware etc. do, but in front of a camera, so we should probably wind our necks in a bit about them, especially if by our own admission we haven't watched their content.
That's... pretty misleading. They have only really started their "actual" reviews in the last year or so, with the development of their labs and stated ambition to be the go to for tech reviews. That 1% of all videos ever made is almost 100% of their new review output driven by the labs, i.e. their new roadmap, and GN found factual errors in nearly every video.
I just refreshed my memory as to the situation, and it’s worse than I remembered it being. She posted a long twitter thread outlining all the issues she faced: https://x.com/suuuoppp/status/1691693740254228741?s=46&t=hGy8_QkXR7nJ6oLSxXxWWQ (Not sure whether embedding will work). To me it doesn’t read as a “disgruntled ex-employee”, it reads someone in a toxic working environment whose concerns were never taken seriously. Yes, you are only hearing “one side”, but in these situations the employer cannot address every single point or detail in public. In their “we want to do better” video they did make vague references to “HR improvements”, but that’s about the only public acknowledgment you’ll get from Linus Media Group. Whether or not every single allegation is true is, ultimately, irrelevant. She clearly had a shitty experience working there and her reward for saying or even insinuating anything about it was death threats. Again, it doesn’t matter if the people sending death threats actually mean it, sending a death threat is threatening someone else’s life. There’s definitely work for LMG to do in regards to employee protection and feedback, and taking that stuff seriously. But I can’t figure out how to put whats in my head into words… and it’s late… and I’ve struggled to switch off and get to sleep at night this week… so… I’m going to bed now…
I feel like the kid who shows up at the park, and all of my mates have Transformers whilst I got an Action Man.
I'm disappointed with your analogy, Andrew. Given your obvious interests, I expected a BMX vs Raleigh Grifter comparison.
I think I've more or less convinced myself to go MiniITX, possibly even switch CPU platforms to Intel. Bought a ticket to a LAN party recently and it kinda kickstarted the whole thought process. I initially planned to take just my Steam Deck with me, but I have a MiniITX B660i board in the lounge gaming PC which is running a 12100F and a Noctua L9i-17xx cooler. I'm now wondering whether it's worth getting case for that machine that's compact enough to stuff in my motorbike's top box, meaning I can slap in my 3070Ti and use that for the LAN... Furthermore, this also leads me to wonder whether I think I could manage with that as my primary gaming PC (with a possible upgrade to a 12400F).... Sure would be nice to retain the nice slim L9i cooler, but that also does limit me in terms of maximum CPU power... Off to YouTube to find some benchmarks on the 12100F & 12400F, I think.
All of the recent 400 series have been amazing. 10400f, 11400f, 12400f. All as cheap as chips, yet beast for gaming. I've gone off AMD a bit. Mostly because they are expensive, and have more problems than they should do at those prices. Then again I am a cheap ass, so I generally buy whatever is cheap and fast
TBH, based on the reviews I've just watched, I think I could probably even get by with the 12100F for a short while. Most games are GPU-limited anyway. I think I have to slap my 3070Ti into the lounge gaming machine and do some benchmarks.
How much room is there in your panniers? I have unboxed my NR200 and it looks fine for a fixed ITX case. I'll be parting with my Dan Cases A4 SFX, which would be a great portable rig for LANs. I'm going back to the nearly double the volume 13.5L Sliger S610 for LAN duty, room for a larger cooler and the all important carry handle.
Im jealous, havent been to a lan party in likely 15 years. Im old and sad so dont know anyone or really play anything any more.
Didn’t they up the core count on the 12 series? I know the 11400f has 6/8. It’s also faster for gaming than the 12400f. That may sound like nonsense but it’s not. Well, providing you have the right board. See with the 11400f Intel left a bug in (chin scratch) where if you put it on a Z590 board it disabled all turbo limit duration and basically let it eat. Obviously they no longer had to be as desperate with 12 series as they were way better.
Not enough to fit a Silverstone RVZ03, because I just tried Now that piques my interest… The Dan A4 and the Fractal Ridge are the two candidates I’ve been considering - I really like the look of the Ridge! I need to measure up the bike’s top box to check the available size. But I’m also on the lookout for a case for the other half as well, so getting both the Ridge and the A4 isn’t entirely out of the question… I’ll know maybe one other person there The 12100F is 4C/8T and the 12400F is 6C/12T, all performance cores. AFAIK you don’t get any efficiency cores added until the 12600K, which is 6P/4E/16T (hyperthreading on the P-cores).
Ah I see. I would say quick! Rush out and buy a z590 itx but the £100 for a £350 Vision thing has long sailed sadly. Tree stop pedalling your wares onto the poor chap
