You're right - don't know what purpose the v serves, but assumed I had to leave it there. Turns out you don't - thanks :thumb:

Holy **** BBC, they've put an image of five people being disintegrated in an explosion on the front page, shrapnel, red mist, chunks and all.

Well that's about the most grizzly thing I've ever seen on a mainstream news site, even in it's reduced state I expect better than tabloid gore porn from BBC News.

Thing is, this sort of stuff used to be shown all the time on BBC news back in the 70/80s (one in particular comes to mind: the gassing of the kurds by the Iraqis). I don't think people are aware of the horrors of war enough anymore. Has it become overly sanitised? Quite possibly. Maybe 'stuff' needs to be shown as it really is so people aren't always living in a bubble.

Edit: and it's far better than some crap about some celebrities...

I wonder if that cultural trend had something to do with the US photo ban on military coffins which lasted from '91-'09, under the pretence of protecting the feelings of the families of fallen soldiers...

I guess my problem with it is three fold.

When these people died last year the BBC didn't find it news worthy, it was a training accident, now they've got a gory picture it's suddenly front page.

It's not in any way insightful. It's not exposing some kind of atrocity or showing the horrors of the front line. They were killed in an accident by a faulty mortar shell. Sadly accidents happen, they happen a lot to the Afghans who are mostly equipped with mid Soviet era technology. Those shells weren't well made to begin with and after fourty years of degradation they're temperamental at best. There's a story in there about these people expected to fight IS with gear that's completely unsuitable.

It's disrespectful, the article doesn't even bother giving the people being turned to red mist names. If you're going to publish pictures like this for the sake of click bait, at least have the respect to put names to faces, they are not Specialist Clayton and four others.

I'm less bothered by the violence of it, more the flippant attitude of the BBC.

Whether you object to it or not (on whatever grounds), you can't deny that it's a powerful photograph. I can't think of a more visceral demonstration of what we ask armed forces personnel to do (supposedly) on our behalf. This was a training exercise: imagine how much worse it must be in actual combat.

Though perhaps it shouldn't be front-page stuff. Who knows what sorts of PTSD episodes or combat stress it could trigger in former or serving personnel.

Btw the image in question as far as I can tell shows no gore, no death (at that exact point), no red spray / mist. So I really can't see what you're going on about. The image is powerful none the less.

No gore, but I was also taken aback that they effectively had a picture of someone in the process/moment of death brazenly on the front page. I think it was even on the main BBC front page not just /news. I don't necessarily think it is a bad thing but I'd like to think there was difficult editorial decision behind showing that image in that way. I, like fix-the-spade, have my suspicions it was more of a thoughtless and clickbaity "look at this amazing picture" type of thing.

1682 page pdf from a Court in Columbia detailing the various misdeeds of Philip Morris over the decades, if you want a depression then it is recommended reading.
