http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/201...Feed:+RockPaperShotgun+(Rock,+Paper,+Shotgun) One read of this had me laughing very hard but also feeling very sorry for anyone who took this article serious and built the very same PC. 160GB HDD for a gaming PC? 700w Alping PSU?
Lol Rock Paper Shotgun, a few years ago they were supposed to take part in a Planetside tournament against an Escapist users team (including me). SOE kindly handed out free access keys and a couple of months subscription time to everyone, then they didn't bother to turn up on match day. Nice to see they're keeping up the standards.
I facepalmed at that part too when I read that article. I seriously hope no one follows their advice (at least regarding the PSU).
Not that bad I'm OK with 128gb ssd on main gaming PC . Worried about 17£ psu send from Deathstar via HAL9000
Its like buying a Fender and propping it up with a balsa wood stand... Also I would use up that space in like... 2 hours... give or take, and thats only due to install/download times. EDIT Just realised, no os/peripherals, gonna play games bosslike without that!
Yeah, it's a pretty poor build from a site that prides itself only on PC gaming. That said, I do enjoy RPS and play Planetside 2 with them.
Exactly. Terrible build from RPS, and a really lazy article. I know this is said frequently, but I could do far better. In the comments I wrote "Parge says: This is what I would buy if I had to just shop at Ebuyer (for simplicitys sake). Decent PSU, cheaper memory, slower CPU, but that won’t make too much difference until your gaming with multiple cards at +1080p, and comes with a heatsink to OC. Awesome GPU and a SSHD – so you get a decent speed boost over HDs but without the size limitions of SSD. Crucial 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz Ballistix Elite Memory Kit CL8 1.5V £44.99 Fractal Design Core 1000 MicroATX Case £28.00 Asus M5A78L-M LX3 Socket AM3+ VGA 8 Channel Audio mATX Motherboard £37.46 AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz Socket AM3+ 14MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor £96.59 Corsair 500W CX Builder 80 Plus Bronze PSU 3 Year Warranty £42.86 KFA2 GTX 660 Ti EX OC 2GB GDDR5 £219.50 Seagate 500GB Hybrid Drive SSHD SATA 6Gb/s £59.99 Total inc vat: £529.39"
Absolutely, instantly a much better build, despite being AMD It has a better PSU that isn't going to explode in your face, a proper HD rather than some dodgy 160GB thing off eBay, and a good case.
But dat quad core doe. I'd supplant a 660Ti for a 7870 these days. They're arguably a bit cheaper. Even better if you get that Tahiti LE version.
Oh I fully agree with the 7870xt being the better card for the money, it's just ebuyer didn't have any in stock when I was picking parts.
If I weren't a PC nerd and was now trying to transition from consoles to PCs in the wake of the lacklustre XBO and PS4 news, I'd just get one of the Dell mini range and stick a mid-range half-height graphics card in it. Cheaper and better. I've tried to beat them on price with a custom build and it's actually damned hard: OEMs like Dell just win over custom builds at this price point.
At work lot's of my mates have already come to the conclusion of '**** next gen, I'm getting a PC'. No prizes for guessing how many have also said 'Hey Jonty, you could give me some help if I was building a PC, right?'.
Trouble with that is you can't get a mid range half height graphics card. Super low range, sure, but nothing that would be better than a next gen console. Then there is the issue of the PSU.
I've had plenty of people at school saying the same thing. The only difference is that they don't ask me because I'm not popular and buy a premade Ebay machine. Their loss I guess.
their build with a decent PSU isn't that bad, and throwing a better PSU is what £20-30 more (corsair cx430 is £37, and would be big enough for the system) storage may be limiting, but thats upgradable for the cost savings in 2-3 games (vs console) however none of these are adding OS cost of the build, and that will bump the price up a fair bit. I'd also go 7870 (fairly comparable performance) which would reduce GPU to £170ish [edit] just to add, with AMD powering the consoles, it may be that the intel/amd single threaded disparity may shrink. if their coding for AMD silicon, then they're unlikely to use intels compiler, and therefore make use of all of the AMD featuresets. so AMD as the basis of the machine isn't really that much of an issue.
Their BIG loss, ebay sellers have some crazy profit margins going on. Honestly, HP and Dell are much better deals than ebay (if you buy them online rather than in PC World, that is). Tell them so The Dell PSUs used to be terrible (the Core 2 era Optiplexes just eventually always failed) but I'd guess they've improved a lot since. Power supply reliability has generally improved a lot in the last few years, such that I wouldn't feel anxious about buying a SFF machine any more. The half-height GPU problem is a killer, though. I'm trying to think of a way around it that doesn't involve sticking a sodding great mATX case in your living room...
