Prob a noobish question, but what is the difference between a VFD and a LCD?

well there are several majod differences

main thing is that lcds are completely invisble in the dark unless they have a good backlighting VFDs again are in them selves made up of very small lights if we can put it that way (if you look at the pics you can see that the sign is actually what is glowing not the background) so it's basically much more visible much fancier and has many many more options then an lcd. Also it draws images much faster making it possible to draw "movie sequences". altho it is more expensive it looks much better and is programmable in many more ways.

basically that's it as for controlling interfaces there are also many options jut like in LCDs

so if you need something that fits in with old and new technologies aswell (in the means of looks) go with a vfd module...

if you want more details look @ here: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=44604 this faq details both lcds and vfds

well my dremel decided it's okay to loosen up now. It was about time after soaking in screw loosener for more than a 100 hours...
...so i made the cut-out for the vfd which came out acceptable but a little rough on the edges.
Unfortunately the bad weather thought i shouldn't do anything else today so that's where i had to stop but i'm makin progress at least.

i'm still filing some edges and stuff pics will be up in a few hours...

    update time

so here are the pics as promised

okay so here you can see i installed the fvd module to the hidden plate under the removable front plate, and to prevent shorts and overtightening the screws of the vfd i put a thick layer of sponge-like foam under it

here's the foam i put under it it's the stuff used in graphics card and other packaging

here's the front plate installed vith the viewing hole for the vfd cut out
i will put some kind of shaded plexi in front of it so don't complain about it not beeing 100% accurate, also a green colouring film will be there so it looks like the pipboy texts

this is the mesh that i'm going to put the vacuum tubes behind

it will look something like this

    and that concludes today's update

don't complain about the colours as i said many times before the paintjob will be the last thing

    happy moddin all :dremel: :hip:

Keep em coming!! I hope you have more luck with your tubes than I had with mine, I couldn't get them to glow. So I'm goin with the ones I drilled holes in and put some leds in there for some bright light

then they are probably dud if you have an old tube radio that lights up or someone who has'em but doesn't need'em anymore you could pull the tubes and use those otherwise yes you should go with the "led tubes" good luck with it...

btw are you gonna start a project log? i'd be interested

the weather is getting better so i was able to do some more moddin unfortunately i ran out of glass-fiber reinforced cutting disks so i have to continue with the "heavy-duty" ones which are a pain in the ass.
They wear out too fast and have a much harder frip so they1re harder to control.
All that's left is to cut out the slot for the dvd drive. I'm considering doing this with the heavy duty wheels but they are simply too much of a pain.
Also i ran out of the sanding rings so i can't finish the vent hole...

i'll sink of something pics will be @ nite

    ok another small update

finally cut out the hole under the vent cover
    [IMG]
the hole that will be behind the mesh that will house the vacuum tubes
    [IMG]
a test view of the mesh
    [IMG]
here the mesh is installed & i put a tue behind it to see how it will look
conclusion i definitely have to paint that mesh to a dark colour
    [IMG]
a mockup of the front plate

i actually have that cut out but since i don't have any more sanding rings the cutout of the fan looks terrible.

If all goes well tomorrow afternoon i'll go buy some sanding rings have the paintshop mix some military paint for me and possibly even finish the front plate!

Yeah, you should paint the mesh a darker colour, but not black. Maybe a gray or a rusted brown/green.

Can't wait to see how this turns out!

    Well...

... you remember i had an unlucky streak few weeks back and it seems to be returning...

Just held a party yesterday and the pc i played the music from (my main rig) just refuses to boot since then. No we didn't spill anything in it or stuff like that it just keeps bitching about dram timings (tried it with 2 diff rams). If you have any ideas how i might be able to bring it back to life i'd be grateful. (RMA not possible since i've replaced the NB heatsink with a zalman and the retention clips for the original broke)

If i can't fix this the project gets another big delay...

I was about to buy the paint tomorrow but if i can't do anything with this POS then i'm screwed.

OK i don't knw how to make a poll here so i'm just gonna ask what you think:
should i put the original fan grill on the front plate (as seen in the pics) or should i put some mesh there like the ones that will be in front of the tubes ?

    :sigh: keep on moddin fellas

    laugh all you want...

i really feel like an utter and complete idiot... but at least my rig is ok :D
