Rods & Mods The Exploratorium wants to display YOUR case mods, restored computers, and cool hardware hacks on February 11, 12, and 13, 2010. Hello Modders, Has your passion for Jules Verne, Star Wars, or mid-century modernism manifested itself as an eye-catching disguise for your machine? Did your need for speed lead you to overclock your multi-fanned, heat-sinked, water-cooled processor? Ever sewn a computer into clothing, or built one into a tree? Is your restored Apple Lisa or Amiga your greatest treasure? If you hack, restore, or reinvent computers, enjoy talking about your passion, and live in the Bay Area, the Exploratorium wants to hear from you. Like Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and those of the 1960s counterculture car movement, you refuse to settle for “factory-made.” By adapting technology to your personal vision, you and other modders have ultimately changed the ways computers look and perform today. To share your stories and to show off your stuff, we are hosting a 3-day festival on February 11, 12, and 13, 2010. If you are interested in participating, please send your contact info, an image and brief description of your computer, along with details of any special requirements you would have, to Marcus Ante at mante (at) exploratorium (dot) edu. Housed within the walls of San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts, the Exploratorium is a collage of hundreds of science, art, and human perception exhibits and programs. For more info, visit exploratorium dot edu. Thanks! Marcus http://press.exploratorium.edu/rods-and-mods-february-2010/
I decided to break out the pimp cane for this one. I'll be traveling to San Francisco in a few weeks to display a handful of my projects at this event. Also displaying (AFAIK) will be Boddaker, greensabbath, Darth Beavis and others I'm sure. I am excited about going because I think this will turn out to be a major case modding event. I'm looking forward to meeting up with some like-minded hobbyists and seeing their awesome work. If you are going to be in the Bay Area Feb 11th - 13th you should make an effort to visit this exhibit. The Exploratorium is located on the grounds of The Palace of Fine Arts.
In the foreground Chiaroscuro, Sangaku and Yuugou by Greensabbath. In the background Neptune's Trident and Battlestar Gallactica by Boddaker.
2,700 miles for me but I knew I couldn't miss this event. It was an honor to get to display my stuff alongside some of the best in the world. Hopefully the success of this show will motivate other museums to do something similar. It's a no-brainer really. Maybe something in New York in the fall.
I would have loved to get a first hand look at those rigs, along with yours, but traveling across the country is definitely out of the budget right now. I've got appointments with 3 orthodontists in the next few days to get braces for my daughter, so you know where my money is about to be going.
Try to make the next one. I'm confident there will be another one but maybe not at this level ever again. Two MOTY, six MOTM, two Cooler Master contest winners and six CPU Magazine covers...oh, and Halle Berry.
Very nice! Lol, I looked at the pic before I read your text and thought "Damn, that looks just like Halle Berry!"
That is Brian Carter aka Boddaker standing next to her. You can see a glimpse of Neptune's Trident to the left. This was a fantastic show. I really enjoyed myself. The crowds were smart and thoughtful and were genuinely appreciative of our hard work and artistry. I have displayed at trade shows and LANs that were filled with a high percentage of turdage. Kids who should be shoved back into their mother's wombs and "professionals" who judge your work solely on its marketability. I knew I couldn't miss this and I was proven right. I would post more photos and links but I don't think many BT readers venture this far back into the forums. This much bit-tech featured hardware deserves better coverage IMHO.
I don't have the best photos. We'll see if the others post their stuff. I want the sponsors and journalists who passed on this event to "read all about it".
You need to get Boddaker to post his photos. His are way better than mine. My camera had a wrong white balance setting. There are photos posted on other sites but you'll have to find them for yourselves. Rules and etiquette blah blah.
Awesome. So the mods were grouped by creator? And anyone can cart their stuff to this event? If the next one is also on the West Coast, I will definitely be there next year
