There seem to be a lot of titles for handhelds (the DS to be exact). Can't recall of the top of my head but I have a few turn-based ones that kept me entertained for hours and the games were pretty good.

I can't say for the future but i will say that if you're a final fantasy nut (by nut i mean you do EVERYTHING in a FF game besides the storyline e.g. Taking down emerald weapon without underwater materia in FF7, taking out Omega Weapon in FF8, Unlocking and defeating Penance in FFX etc. etc.) then you absolutely must get Star Ocean:Til The End Of Time for PS2.

Its a perfect example of how turn-based RPG should be done in my humble opinion. Ridiculous amounts of extra stuff to find/do and the combat is fantastic. The combat is action RPG AND turn-based like final fantasy but you're also in full control of movement, its kinda hard to get across. Its full control of characters in a hack'n'slash way but you still have the menu options for magic/items/special skills etc. There's also a huge amount of trophies (or achievements) to acquire some of which really take the perseverance of a true FF fan to get.
This should give you an idea (but he's really not playing it very well)

I didn't think i would like it at first but it's just so well done i cannot reccomend it enough.

Dragonquest has always been fun, if a little cartoony in its styling. PS2 again.

As for later consoles i honestly can't say i've found anything which comes up to the standards of older titles. They all get ruined by an obsession to pretty up the graphics *sigh* That would be fine but they kill the gameplay in the process.

Sorry about the long reply but i'm a massive massive FF geek and have the same problems.

For a slight devation of type also look out for Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus for PS2. If you haven't played them before i promise you wont be disappointed.

My default go-to game for long car or plane trips! It's very easy to pick up and play and you get total control over your job classes as well.

You can get FFIV for the DS, but it's not exactly turn based and I don't like it as much for a handheld game since it's less pickup and go.

You can even play this on PS1, PS3 or PSP depending on how you buy it!

Or try the Tactics Advance line-up!

On my ds I enjoyed Luminous Arc, started the 2nd but never got around to finishing it, fire emblem shadow dragon though I don't recall much of that game either, final fantasy tactics. Also not an RPG but turn-based was the tank wars or w/e it was called.

The last remenant for the PC NOT xbox.

pretty good turn based rpg with some interesting ideas PC version is better though as it doesnt suffer from horrid lag and draw distances like xbox360

If you're more into the tactical RPG elements than the character, grab yourself a PS3 and a copy of Disgaea 3. The game has a story as such, but is more focused around winning battles by controlling the battlefield with some ridiculous combinations of characters and environmental effects.

The level of character development (in terms of jobs/roles/skills) is huge, and it's got great humour throughout, real tongue-in-cheek stuff. I love the fact you can level to level 9999 too ;) Nippin Ichi (the developers) have a real knack for tactical RPG goodness :)

Also check out Valkyria Chronicles for PS3 while you're at it. Gorgeous semi-cel-shaded, faux-WWII turn-based strategy based around tanks, specialists and controlling the map. I loved that game :)

wow! looks like im guna be a very busy boy :) i reckon im guna pick up a ds and give those a go. i played the last remnant on 360 and enjoyed it :) if only the final fantasy people would give you an option to fight turn based or realtime that would be dope for a future game :) hope they ditch all that linear bullcrap .

    thanks folks :)
