Sorry, I meant sane for me. Mind you my base level is probably drastically different to everybody else's
Michel Foucault has entered the chat. There's a grain of truth to that, but it does fall a bit short in the case of serious stuff like psychosis. My dad had an episode when he was young, stripped down and walked off along a motorway. There was more than eccentricity at work that day
Your dad isn't my uncle is he, he did that too. I think the family story is he was carrying a crucifix at the time though.
Sad news, but not entirely unexpected. Thanks for all the support over the 10 years this site played a big part of my life. I can still remember the utter disgust my parents had when I told them I was going to quit my degree in my third year to go work on the internet. The support I received from the community when I lost my first wife to cancer in 2008 was simply incredible. As was the support from the amazing team (Richard, Joe, Harry, Hiren and, very much behind the scenes, Riyad & Hugh) who kept things running while I dealt with being hit by a metaphorical bus. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. We can’t forget Moose, either. One of the original devs; he died in a helicopter crash over the North Sea in 2009. During my time, the main site was circa 75% of total site traffic. But the forums weren’t insignificant, routinely with 1000+ members online. And with plenty of commercial opportunities asking to specifically target the community rather than the main site. The man himself. Living legend. I forget how to end posts these days… I’m out of forum etiquette. Something like kthxbye?! And thanks for all the cheesecake.
Yeah. I spoke about it further up the thread but BOXFX which was the company I officially worked for as bit-tech is owned by The Media Team. Both owned by the same larger company. BOXFX was bought out by Corsair so I'm now a developer over there.
We'll always have the cheesecake. Phew, nobody likes to think of a Doge out in the cold over Christmas. I hope all the staff fall on their feet somewhere.
Well I only saw this today... just the month late !! I usually go straight to the forum but today I went through the front page and saw 'we are closed' !! Congratulations @MLyons
just wondering what tech sites do you guys recommend? my goto had always been bit-tech and hardocp over the years
I'm possibly landing myself in it by saying this, but I actually get most of my industry temperature and news from the big Youtubers rather than tech sites now - Linus, Nexus, Jay, and so on. Following the industry is always 90% idle curiosity, 10% actual consumer guidance, since if we all bought all the things we read about and talk about, we'd all be broke and drowning in hardware*, so the entertainment value/watchability of these channels is a big draw for me personally. And I'm lazy and reading is hard. The Youtubers also behave very visibly like a little community of nerds, fact-checking, responding to and bantering with one another, so there's a sense of rigor there that you perhaps aren't guaranteed by a large independent outlet. Youtube being such a pit of angry squabbling, nobody makes a mistake and gets away with it, which is nice. Probably exhausting for content creators, but nice for us. Speaking of which, also keeping an eye on Crapman's new channel, because I'm buzzed to see a local Bit-Tech boi enter the fray. Go subscribe, he's probably going to need moral support the first time he mispronounces a brand name and the comments section decides to eat him alive. *Yes I know some people are. Thoughts and prayers.
Ronald David Laing has entered the chat Not sure there is such a thing. Adaptive orientation to and interpretation of reality, maybe. End of an era... but at least the forum continues.
