Unbelievably, there doesn't appear to be a thread devoted to the Oculus Rift yet on BT. So anyway, the dev kits are now shipping, and in the hands of the first people to back the Rift. Apparently support is being added for Left 4 Dead, Half-Life 2, Portal 2, Skyrim, Mirror’s Edge, Unreal Tournament 3, Dear Esther, and DiRT 2. Older titles initially (I suppose the devs are more familiar with the engines of these games than newer titles), but I'd wager we should see it in some newer ones soon. I personally don't think its going to lend itself that well to all types of games but man, things like mirrors edge and Dirt 2 could be totally epic.
I had one in gaming, but it got a hell of a lot of scepticism! I for one can't wait for the retail model and have money set aside for it! F1 with rift and a wheel is going to be mind blowing if its done right!
Ignore the haters! I guarantee you there will be a dozens of 'OR's being added to signatures around BT this time next year. From what I can ascertain so far, it won't even be too expensive. I'd happily pay £300 if it was as amazing as those who have tried it so far have said.
The site The Verge report looking at the dev kit If it works, and things are looking good, it could be the birth of useable VR headsets. THe image will cover your whole FOV and will move via head tracking. 3D ghostless is also a given due to the way it works.
Skyrim, F1, BF3, Portal, AvP(despite how awful it was), Fallout 3, this list is pretty enormous. I'd be really impressed if somone made it work for Trials though
Could it be used for 'normal' computing too? As a replacement for a screen? A virtual globe of screen around you? Surrounded by the windows desktop?
I immediately think of using this with headphones and playing through the Shalebridge Cradle. New shorts please.
I really want to try one of these out, however I am practically blind in my right eye. does anyone know how the image is displayed through the visor? is it split with half on each eye or is a complete image displayed for both eyes?
I'm not sure how well it'll work for fast paced FPS games, at least at first. Its implementation will no doubt be massively refined as devs get to grips with the kit further down the line. Yeah, feasibly possible, but I don't know if there would be any advantage to added immersion for Windows (watching videos?). The latter, so it could actually work for you, if I understand your condition correctly
Size constrains. Having huge screenspace without having to have a huge desktop. A small mini-itx rig with a hook for the goggles and a ridge to prop your keyboard against is all the real-life desktop space you need. I guess it would get cheaper too; you only got one (maybe two) semi-decent screens for 300$... Ah, the possibilities...
