This is old news now, given that Sandybridge has been out for 12 months. But i'm impressed, anyway!

Built my 2500k machine the other day, complete with Gelid Tranquillo. I've undervolted the CPU by -0.150v (no sign of instability, so there's more to come) at stock speeds, and it'll run Prime with a max temp on core 1 (the hottest core) of 47 degrees - core 0 is the coolest one, at 42 degrees! and it's practally silent, too!

It's a big step up from my Athlon x2!

Anyone else undervolted their CPUs in this way? I found very little information on the net about it, so perhaps it's something of a niche?

ps - i realise the irony of buying a "k" series CPU and then undervolting it! I've bought it with the intention of overclocking in the future, to extend it's service life...

There is one guy on here that claims he has his 2500k running at 5Ghz with load temps of 39c on air.

I don't quite know how he has managed to do that or if its bs, have pm'd about it but no reply.

I am running at 4.3 @ 1.25v and get loads of 60 - 64c in prime95 which is fine for me. Sandybridge chips are terrific, hopefully Ivybridge will be as equally good.

    LOL. Yeah agree with this.

My overclock needs 1.475volts to hit 4.7ghz with core temps ranging from 64 to 74C (lowest core temp , compared to highest) using intel burn test for 30mins. But my cooler is massive!

I wonder if I lapped the CPU if the difference between core temps would narrow? As currently differ by 10C.

Most likely a borked temp sensor.

And depends which temp reading he is looking at, he doesn't specify core temps, or just 'cpu' temps.

Not likely, but it would lower the temps.

My 2600k and H70 (when I was using it) were both lapped to a mirror finish and it drops temps by 8-10 degrees.

Then I went to full water and it lowered temps by 20 degrees :p

Only my celeron based server, but it's undervolted, and underclocked... and running passively.

The 'cpu' temp sensor on speccy seems to give an average of the 4 core temps. Perhaps a bad sensor but seriously, 38c @ 5Ghz under load? What core voltage is that then?

I am quite gullible at times so nearly pulled my rig apart to try the clingfilm TIM job lol

I think you got a (comparatively) bad 2500K.
Mine only needs 1.356V for a stable 4.9Ghz overclock. The voltage jump for 5.1Ghz is silly, though it's still less than yours needs for 4.7Ghz(I've hit 5.2 with your voltage) ;)

So what voltage do you have on the CPU exactly?

    Still tinkering... Currently 1.056v @ 3.4ghz.

There doesn't seem to have been any temp drop between 1.080v and 1.056v. Perhaps i've hit the limit of the cooler? Still idles the same - about 30 degrees.

Can i influence how much speedstep underclocks? When using the "Real Temp" sensor test, at one point it clocked down to 800mhz. But at idle it sits at 1.6mhz....

You can have a fiddle with the 'C States' in BIOS, that yields various underclocking idle results.
