I’m against payday loan companies and did before bash them for ruining lives, breaking up marriages and everything else associated with them. However when we were behind with our rent by £200 it left with me no option but to get a payday loan. Which worked out in the long run because my rent got paid on time and i got stung for £80! I’m now in a better situation where i earn £300 a month more and soon my insurance payments will drop from £179 a month to £14 a month!

So from 5 minutes of research and bit of luck i'll be 514 better off a month! .

After reluctantly sticking my old, borked 580 GTX in the oven for 9 minutes at 200C, it works again.

I hope you do not plan to prepare food in that oven anymore.

Why? It's fine after a good scrub.

If you say so. I wouldn't put food in there, but hey, it's your digestive tract :).

It'll be fine - I've cleaned it very well.

Anyway, you did see the bit about the card working again, right? :)

Why? RoHS has eliminated leaded solder. Sure there might be other stuff on a graphics card that you don't want heated up, vapourised, and deposited on your oven, but I highly doubt anything dangerous is going to build up inside of 9 minutes (or at temperatures as low as 200°C).

That's the conclusion I reached after my pre-bake research too. From what I read, the nasty stuff isn't released until much higher temps. There was no visible smoke during the bake at all, and the kitchen (with windows open of course) just smelled exactly like the component store room where I worked as a PC builder/engineer many moons ago. Quite nice actually :) and the smell was completely gone within 10-15 mins.

More good news... It's early days and I'm taking things slowly but since the bake, the card doesn't need as much voltage when overclocking. With hindsight, I don't think it was very well when I bought it (used) a couple of years ago, but it seems much happier now.

If it keeps me going until Pascal then I'll be chuffed, by which time used 780's & 970's will hopefully have come down a bit (...and I'll finally leave s775 (kicking and screaming) behind. :D).

Baking usually helps for 2-3 months or so.

It depends how well (or badly) it's done.

Pre-heating the card, having an accurate oven temp, ensuring the card is completely level in the oven (bubble level), cooling the card slowly and not moving it at all until completely cold.

All of the above should help post-bake longevity.

Following its bake, the ol' 580 has never run better and this evening I can look forward to a couple of hours of uninterrupted BF4. Bliss.
