Not from Microsoft, though. The choice.

Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8 with a Start Menu replacement. Change default programs, browser, file associations. Change skin, wallpaper, sounds. Run on desktop, laptop, tablet. Use whatever input method you want.

    Choice.

Lenovo don't exactly like Windows 8 either.
Lenovo Win 8 systems to bundle Start Menu replacement

And as we speak the German government is digging around in the basement for one of these :hehe:

No, Lenovo is just giving customers what it thinks they want --in the time-honoured tradition of companies including all sorts of other 'useful' bloatware.

BTW IIRC, 'Die Zeit' is a bit of a gossip mag, and the German government has already complained about the misrepresentation of its position in their article.

Mesnwhile I refer you to the poll results. :D

For someone who exalts choice, it seem you have a very negative opinion of Lenovo offering that choice to their customers :eyebrow:

Maybe 'Die Zeit' misrepresented what the BSI initial statement meant, but the BSI clarified its statement later by saying...
“As a result, new risks occur for users, especially for federal and critical infrastructure,” it said.
The statement concluded: “The new mechanisms in use can also be used for sabotage by third parties. These risks need to be addressed.”

I don't have a problem with it. People can use the Start Menu replacement or uninstall it. I just dispute the inference that it is a reflection of Lenovo's feelings about Windows 8 any more than bloatware is a reflection of how OEMs feel about any version of Windows that they include it with.

Well why else would they pre-install free software if its not a reflection on how agreeable or congenial they feel about Windows 8 ?

Because they believe it's what customers want? As they do with all the other bloatware they pre-install. I doubt it's inclusion has any more to do with their views on Windows 8 than the inclusion of other software had anything to do with their views of Windows 7, Vista, XP etc.

If they had ditched the 18 year tradition sooner there may have been no need for all the stardock customisation software or rocketdock etc.

Shouldnt really be needed to install those StartMenu alternatives. All it would take was to Microsoft to provide the option to use the StartMenu.

except by including the start button, they are not giving choice. if they were truly giving choice, there would be an option when the machine starts up - worded something like "Windows 8 doesn't come with a visible start button, would you like to have one added?"

@impar: MS pays regular dividends, that affects share price - actually it makes share price very static, just look at share price changes since 2003 (the year they started paying dividends). So that chart is not actually of a Ballmer era, but of a dividend era.
