Reading your project logs is great fun... there's a lot to learn in them... About cutting aluminum with wood power tools, its really pretty easy if you use the right bits and blades. For example, on a table saw or chop saw, a fresh carbide tipped crosscut blade works great, just keep in mind that it won't stay sharp like it will cutting wood. The same with a router... carbide tipped bits do a great job, especially if you're willing to do some finish sanding on the edges. You can see examples in BaDassumption, cutting, shaping, etc. with the simplest of woodworking tools. But back to your project... awesome stuff!!!
nice work. if effort is proportional to the result, you're sure to have put a lot of sweat and tears into this one. congratulations on the front page mention too!
ok 2 things i think would be awsome is can u picture the corners more better so we know how they lock together and another is WE DEMAND you to give us a tutorial on this leet woodworking! please lol
I love how everyone else in your studio is hard at work on, I'm assuming, their architecture projects, while you tinker with your computer case... Looking forward to how you surpass Sangaku!
That is quality carpentry work! I've no experience of the timber used, 'koa' looks abit like brazilian mahogany form the pics... but would simply soaking the timber in water not made it workable enough to get that gentle curve? **subscribed**
Thank you. Soaking doesn't work nearly as well as the heat caused by the microwave really does the trick in making it pliable enough to bend. @gebrek: I actually took over an entire extra table when i moved into the studio. Most of the time i worked on the case even during class time while the professor was there...they didn't seem to mind too much Update tonight or early tomorrow. Thanks everyone for your comments, you're keeping me motivated to work like crazy on this thing.
Thanks a lot everyone for your support and for your viewing pleasure, i have another update. Putting everything together from the last update, we're left with this: and a huge hole on top something must be done, something like this after some cutting, we get this This is the next step for later once the inside stuff was done, it came time to connect it to the frame but first came laying it out then came cutting the tennons and eventually i got this Putting it all together: This thing is really going to lock itself together once its done so from now on, i can't put it entirely together, that's why that gap is there. from now on, i'm going to work on the sides indivudually, finish them, and put them all together. Next i'll make the inner koa details, stay tuned.
Another excellent looking update greensabbath. Your craftsmanship is truly inspiring. The metal that is in that picture, will that be the case front?
I would make that the back and get a koa front imho that is the way to go. But that thing is gonna be a beast! It may be well one of the heaviest cases around. How do you plnan on covering the sides if you are?
thanks guys. So far, i'm using 3/16 inch aluminum plates (like the one in the pic) for the front and back, powdercoated/painted black or at least that's the plan so far but that could definately change as i could just put something over the alu. as for the sides, one will get a clear 3/16 inch clear plexi panel and be the window. the other two will get real rice paper this time backed with 3/16 inch plexi to help even out the lighting and protect the paper. This thing definately is a beast, its huge and that aluminum weighs a ton. Thats partially why i'm leaving it in two sections, the wood part which weighs a ton, and the alu/components part which weighs even more.
wow that is one of the best hand build cases i have ever seen and is deffinatley the nicest keep up the good work dude
Thanks man. My friend pointed this little guy out to me: http://jab-tech.com/Swiftech-MCW60-...Assembly-for-Graphics-Processors-pr-3415.html Its a pelt for my vid card which will be top end. So far my wc setup will include: 1/2inch or 3/8inch tubing swiftech mcp655 pump black ice gt stealth 360 what do you guys think about the pelt thing? i'll probably just integrate it into the main loop so i don't have to get double the stuff. I'm considering this since that thing costs only a bit more than most good blocks and the vid card seems more important than extreme cpu cooling. edit: on second thought, after reading this thread http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=117893 and the info nexxo said, i might have to go all pelts, we'll see
