Case Mod - In Progress Battlestar Galactica Mod: Complete!

Interesting idea there, z4114! I get your concept, and it may be possible like you said after a bit of fine-tuning. I'll definitely keep it in mind.

 

A bit more work done on the top, between the LCD screens and IO panel. This is taking longer than I anticipated,
mostly due to the near-freezing temperatures we've had here lately. I was hoping to have all this done days ago.



I cut the side pieces so they fit around the IO panel.


Then made another piece to go in between them. Tacked them in place, then used bondo to reinforce the joints.


This last shot shows the pieces without the screens in place. I also sanded down the joints.


Still have to add the armor panels, and fit the pieces around the landing bay. Work continues!

 

Finished the rest of the top section of the front panel tonight!

i'm following your beatiful work; but I see a but.

The flat area where the DVD comes in through (behind and at the left of the insignia) stands out; it would be best if there was only a slot to receive the DVD

 

Thanks dream caster. Due to the curvature of the front panel, it would be difficult to just make a slot for the disc. The flat area does stand out, but I'm not trying to hide it. I'm actually featuring it as part of the design by putting armor panels next to it that is arrow-shaped. I will paint them red with some graphics as a kind of directional. You'll see what I mean when I get to the painting.

 

With all the little parts, it must be getting hard to move this case. I'm kinda curious how you're doing it.
It looks hot. I want to see it with the engine pods on. (taped or glued.)
The flat spot is OK. Putting a chieftec-style cover door on it would mar the perfection.

 

Nah, just kidding - this looks great and that flat spot doesn't look out of place at all.

Got the mesh in, so I started on fitting it into the engine pods. I wanted a recessed cone shape,
so it was a bit more involved than just cutting out a basic shape.

Started with a piece of mesh..


..cut into it on one side and overlapped it to make a cone shape.


The more you overlap it, the sharper the cone. This is about where I need to be.


This shot shows the overlap, and how I'm able to match the hexagons pretty closely.


Starting to cut it down to size, bending it as I go.


Cut down even more. Now I can stick it into the pod for a trial fit.


After a few trial fits, I just need to trim a bit here and there.


Done. Looks pretty good!


I've decided to take the easy route with the lighting, and just put a couple white cathodes inside the
side panels throwing light into the pods. That should spill enough out the back, and I won't have to
worry about wiring up individual leds in the center cones like I was planning earlier.

@ Cheapskate: I should be able to finally mount the pods to the side panels within the next day or so. Next update
will show the mounting plates being made, and how they'll go on the side panels.

 

i love the curve in that engine pod's mesh

There is one thing i miss tho.... that intricate detail you did amongst the ribbing/armor of the landing bay... i hope to see more of that stuff on other panels, even on things like the front of the dvd tray... are you gonna do more of that stuff?

edit: damn the front of this thing looks crazy!

 

Thanks mvagusta. Yes, I will be doing more detail work prior to paint. I want to get everything to that point before adding more greeble goodness.

The mesh looks good. I like how you positioned the focal point of the cone.

 

Ok i just have to finally say WOW WHAT A MOD! I love the new battlestar galactica and i've been following this thread eagerly (just never subscribing) thats now rectified. Great work and keep it up!

As promised, the pod mounting plate construction:

Here are the pods positioned on the side panel. I guess I got a little carried away when I
applied the ribbing on the side panels all those months ago. Turns out I had to remove some
of them around the area where the pods are. Oh well, at least it's only one side.


I took a sheet of 1/8" styrene, set it behind the pods and traced a line.


Putting my new christmas present to immediate and good use!




Here's that sheet after cutting, including air vent holes.


And here are the pods in place over the mounting plate.


Once glued in place, I can then go in and add ribbing around the pods, and addtional armor plating here and there.
But before I permanently stick the pods on, I still need to do some work to the side panels. I'll get the other side
ready to go too, and do them both at the same time. That will be in the next update, hopefully by the weekend.

 

f@$#ing sweet if this thing was finished last month, it would have been up for moty07, and i would have voted for it, as i suspect most would have also.

edit: i like the ir idea, i'm thinking that it may work better to reflect the ir off the data side of the disc (away from the dvd's r/w laser ofcourse) I think this because discs have various labeling and large dark areas can be hard for the ir to reflect off. so a high sensitivit would be needed, which means a really large void would be needed there in front of the ir when no disc is present.
Here's one photoreflector that i think might work nicely

I think using ir instead of mechanical switches is better, as it will probably take the same or less effort to get it working correctly, and it's a more high-tech option, which suits the case better - nice z4114
