JOB: Project Coordinator WAGE: 26k (37.5hr) Worth It: Yes/No Firstly what is my job: I manage a support project for a charity with 5 full-time staff members + a few part-time staff - I am seriously considering my role at the moment. YES: • I manage a great team, we do truly meaningful work and we honestly change lives for the better. • An ever smaller part of my job involves helping people find work, now this isn't a DWP/JCP contract kind of 'find work', we have no contract, no qutoa and no people forced to see us. • We help to build up peoples lives (often from the lowest run) and a real part of that is encouraging them to work - without going into too much detail I personally get around 100 people a year into employment which is very rewarding. • Examples; yeah some pople will drop in for that run of the mill stuff like careers advice and maybe a CV. But it's not unusual for me to be helping people overcome drug related support needs, or to be assisting a women to leave a domestic abuse situation and find shelter, i.e. WE ARE NOT A JOBCENTRE PROJECT, sorry, I hate JCP schemes, you see the waste and cherry picking from the inside and it's disheartening. • When I began the project 3 years ago, I was the only employee, it has £10,00 to work with (my wages + site costs) and 3 months to run! I've built it to where we are now and am damn proud of it. NO: • We are part of a larger regional charity and they really don't reconise our work very well or indeed seem to actually know what the project does, we bring in enough funding to keep going and produce amazing results - but that's as far as they see. We've a caring bunch and get fulfilling jobs, but it would be good for an occasional nod from the hierarchy (for example I've met our cheif exc only once!), especially as I feel the need to defend our employer to my team on occasion and can't say I do so hole heartedly. • Too much of my time is now devoted to managment, I've definately lost that 'on the front line' feeling that made it special, but I suppose that's advancement for you and I gotta suck it up. • Way too much of our time is spent supporting overpaid idiots Essentially due to the success of our project alot of larger bodies (JCP/NHS/Council/EEDA/IiC/ESF and many more) are always after our opinions and our time, which in a way is a nice reconition, but they usually don't like what we have to say • I see everyday people in positions of real power who really don't understand how the system works on the ground or how their descions will affect the real world. If you knew how the job centre worked...if you knew how connextions worked...if you knew how A4E, TNG, etc worked...and what more could be achieved so so easily for the benefit of everyone then you would honestly grow to resent alot of things about this country and it's systems. • THAT is the bad part of my job, I love it, I love what it does, but it's going to make me very bitter at a lot of this countries systems and I genuinely think we got it pretty damn good here in the UK.
JOB: Hotelian/Agent WAGE: Not sure WORTH IT? Depends how you look at it? I should of done well in school and went on to uni, Then followed my own path, Worth it? No it isn't, but its better then sitting around rotting, so sorta
Job: Hardware Engineer, Graduate Wage: £24.5k pa with benefits. 37 hours pw. Worth It?: Hell yes. finally gathering the fruit of my university work. (pay day this Friday ) Worth it? after you've talked to 47 squadron who flys C-130 and RAF pilots who flys Chinook in Afghan, you'd think the job is 100% worth it. since 90's, there is zero RAF loss due to guided missiles that's all thanks to the hard work done by the company im currently working in. it's saving people's lives. no, my company don't make low tech flairs.
JOB: Senior Design Engineer WAGE: £42K pa Worth It: It pays the mortgage. Like wuyanxu we make safety systems for aircraft, ejection seats and crashworthy/crash attenuating seats for fixed wing and rotorcraft. There is a certain amount of pride working for a company that has saved over 7333 lives. I recently met a crewchief who had had the pleasure of using one of our crash attenuating seats and he was most grateful. I get to travel the world, mainly the USA and get to meet the warfighters in person, which is great. I even managed a ride in a brand new Blackhawk, so yeh it can be brilliant. Ask me whether it is worth it on a day where I am pulling my hair out trying to get an FE model running or fiddling with spreadsheets that would make you toes curl or any day that involves a telecon with Boeing and I might say it was not.
Booga, what company are you in, BAE systems? £42k is quite a lot, you must be some sort of functional lead or manager.
BAE no thank you. Martin-Baker Aircraft. Nope just a plain old Senior Mechanical Designer, though I am Lead Engineer on a number of Crash-worthy projects. Mind you we are not like your normal design engineers, we actually do a lot of the crash simulation and FEA as well as designing.
I was a Bus driver for about 7years £5.90 per hour 38hr a week and for the abuse from passengers and management not worth it at all i earnt more money stacking shelves at night and less hours so win win
Job: General Assistant Wage : £5.80 p/h, 39 hours a week Is it worth it: Hardly. Luckily its a very unique shop within an MOD base so there is no general public or drunken teens to deal with, just the same naval students and officers/ civilian staff every day. It can be quite boring at times when it's quiet, other times it can be hectic when all the deliveries arrive at once & Im the only person with enough commonsense to be able to sort them out/ put them away without turning the storeroom into a giant ****-tip. Based on a monthly income of approx £840, I end up with about £100-150 of truelly disposable income; not enough to run a car on, but just enough to pay for bits & pieces of kit for my hobbies and such. I'd dearly love a better job but I cant imagine living anywhere else or having to travel, so I'll just be content with being a bottom-feeder until I win the lottery on saturday...

Hah, time for an update! Job: Graduate Medical Student Wage: -£3,375/year Worth It? Hells yes! I'll have my MBBS in four years and get to wave a stethoscope with meaning, rather than just pretending. Obviously being an NHS doctor is certainly giving something back to the community. I'm taking a massive pay cut (£23k to negative figures...) to do this, down-sizing my house and outgoings, but don't regret it at all.
Job: Supporttech/Noc worker Wage: ca £28000/year Worth It? Pretty much. Good coworkers, Great workinghours (only work evenings and nights) So usually there´s less to do. Means i can keep watching all movies and series that i do
Job: Linux/QA Intern (maybe?) Wage: $15/hr Hours: 46-50/week Worth it: Yes for the pay, no for the crap I have to put up with most of the time. 2nd Job: Student Wage: -10k/yr and moving to -15k Worth it: Bachelors in Mech Engineering with a Masters in Aerospace Eng. So hell yeah it is worth it! Cost is going up though due to Graduate classes. 3 more years... 3rd Job: Landlord Wage: 13200/yr Worth it: Hell yes. Once you get good tenants this job is easy.
IF YOU'RE EVER CONSIDERING A JOB INVOLVING THE ENFORCEMENT OF LAW THINK VERY CAREFULLY ABOUT WHAT SORT OF PERSON YOU ARE - there's millions of laws in this country and they're getting broken all the time in most walks of life (just ask Richard Branson). I find the whole concept of law ****, any civilization that relies on law to function is not civilised, just stupid and naive and asking for trouble. There's a great range of jobs on here, a most interesting thread.
Job: Civil Servant - Operational Policy Wage: £17k Worth It?mmm....sometimes yes because it can be very challenging and involves alot of research. But sometimes no because it can be very boring at times due to the unpredictable work loads.
Job: Company Director - (I co-own the company or I will do on the 20th of June when it's registered at companies house) Wage: £10k a year, plus a yearly dividend of a forecast amount that makes me more than happy. Worth it? Yes, I'll be working for myself so if it suceeds it will be down to me and if it fails then it will also be down to me (but it's not going to fail).
Job - not sure exact title.. but it involves walking around a arcade making sure machines are topped up and shiz.. Wage - National min. so £4.92 a hour :/ Worth it? - Yes and No.. got a fair ammount for first week but I dont enjoy the 6 hours (sometimes more) without breaks walking around but hey its money at the end of the day which I need for freshers week.
Last job- Gundriller/Honer... wage £25k worth it, just about. New job after 8 months unemployed... woodworking/furniture production.... £12,000, worth it, you gotta be joking. rushed and constant, no time even for a crap. However a job is a job, and easier to find something else when you have a job.
Job:- Project Engineer - Lightning, earthing and surge protection specialist Wage:- £30,800 ish Worth it?:- Yup, enjoyable work, pretty varied with a lot of interesting clients. Becoming internaltionally recognised as an expert in lightning protection with scope to becoming one of the people writing the standards. Downsides..... Sometimes far too much work (I know, I know, don't complain and all that), interfering sales reps trying to undermine my technical feedback to further thier own bonus grabbing sales targets.
