I won't be using track IR and it sounds like if you are insisting on that you'll be on your own!

However, I'll definitely be getting OR, and I'm well keen on creating a Bit Tech Squadron, at least then I don't have to deal with pubbers or some uber geek mini hitler that thinks he is Grand Moff Tarkin.

Anyone thinking about getting a joystick - hold off! Its been hinted multiple times by the dev team that an official licensed peripheral is in the works!

    Hmmm...well I guess that's me told.

The dream having a committed group, with equipment and infrastructure to give us a competitive advantage, comes from playing Eve Online. If you've ever tried to raid a wormhole with people who don't own so much as a mic you may be able to relate.

There's a difference between expecting a minimum level of equipment (headset, joystick) and expecting rather expensive specialist kit - TrackIR costs £160, and Oculus Rift multiples of that. Simply put, why should membership of a BT squadron come with the expectation of £500+ of outlay on hardware?

EDIT: Anybody got any ideas for names?

Wasn't actually suggesting this was a bit-tech thing if you read the original post...they could be affiliated though.

    As for a name...Relix Alliance? Bindi's Badgis? :p

Yeah, agreed on the mic front - its a must, but if nothing else I'm 95% sure trackIR is going to be way more of a hindrance than a help, whatever kind of added immersion it purports to provide.

    BittechStar Galactica?

A microphone in semi-serious organised play is a must, it should be common sense but sadly there are people who don't think to get one... or even to just listen to the others on voice.
Good frequent communication should be the only advantage you need really. A well organised group more often than not beat the well equipped side without too much trouble.

Hmm, names... can't think of a serious one.
All that's running through my head at the moment is The Intergalactic Cheesecake Committee.

To be honest, I've never actually used it....I was just making concessions for those who can't use the oculus rift.

    TrackIR is...interesting.

When supported properly it can be useful, allowing (small) head movements to move the viewpoint around. That said, I ran in to these problems:

    1) The tracking dots fall off your head
    2) Small head movements, not big ones. It gets confused otherwise.
    3) You now have to pay attention where your head is, and sit a lot higher than normal
    4) Wires
    5) Really needs big or multiple monitors for best effect. Use with a 40" TV as a PC monitor and you're probably good to go

In regarding the formation of a squadron, my concept is as follows:

    1) Nothing too serious, but somewhere for like-minded people to have fun with others, so no mini Hitlers or similar.
    2) Place to pool resources for larger, joint, purchases such as capital ships
    3) Provides an easy pool of wingmen and pilots for joint missions
    4) More profit?
    5) Multiple aspects of the game covered: exploration, trading, military...

The one thing that needs to be thought about is that of status. Would we want to remain legal, or engage in piracy and burn our bridges with the UEE? It might even be possible to run both elements, with a respectable face and a lawless wing that does the dirty work.

I would also suggest an avoidance of a formal, military, structure. Instead have a group of leaders who are there to simply retain titular control over the joint resources, but have big decisions all decided as a group?

Depending how the development ends up and whether it is allowed, I'd offer up some of my pledge ships as loaners for members, particularly ones like the Avenger and Freelancer.

Pretty much on the exact same page with you there dude. Sounds perfect to me. I like the idea of having two different wings... we're like the IRA!

I'd love to fly missions as a big group of us, especially with some people in bigger ships (I'll have a 325a which should be perfect for escort duties). Now if only someone had a Starfarer....

That might work, but again, it might not...It all depends on the mechanics of the game, and what they dictate.

For example - Do assets/trade routes need to be protected 24/7? If so you're going to have to expand recruitment to different time zones, in which case committees are going to be a nightmare to arrange.

In addition, if resources are exhaustible you'll have tension between the time zones if one group depletes the resources of the territory, leaving nothing for the next.

Having run a wormhole alliance in Eve I can tell you that what sounds great in theory may fail miserably when putting it in to practice.

Errr, I won't be protecting a trade route 24/7 or organising a case committee (whatever that is), I'm in this for the pew pew rather than the politics.

Agreed, the exact details can only be worked out when we know how the game works. However, the recent posting from CIG about the economy seems to indicate you won't need a 24/7 presence...but that's up in the air.

    What I don't get.
This project gathers >14 million dollars in advance...
and none of the big development companies thinks this genre is still alive?

Welcome to the world of big corporations playing it safe with endless sequels for modern warfare and RPG.

I think we're seeing the real benefit now of Kick-starting. It's taking the power away from the large publishers playing it safe and releasing games to a tight deadline even if they're unfinished.

It's almost like a rebirth of the gaming industry. More like it was back in the 80's when individuals were making games they wanted to play. Now we have small teams of people making the kind of games they love rather than corporations dictating movie tie-ins or COD sequels.

It's the same with flight sims. Once the large corporations jumped on the bandwagon we saw a whole stream of facile dumbed-down arcade sims that almost without exception proved to be dismal failures. Thus the game industry concluded that no one wanted "flight sims" and so we're left with FPS shooters and RPG.

Flight simulation isn't dead. It's back in the hands of enthusiast who build because they love them.

Kick-starters are putting the power back in the hands of people who want to create for the right reason. If star citizen proves to be massively popular then the large corporations will want to get in on the cash cow and we'll see a whole series of poor quality space sims with bad reviews. They will once again do their best to kill the genre and people will say "space games are crap".

Oh God, I spent 3 hours looking at the RSI site last night, staring at the Constellation. I might be upgrading the package I have, or worse, buying the Constellation on TOP of the package I have...

    Help. Please?

Personally I would upgrade your package to the Rear Admiral level, and then add a Hornet as a stand-alone. That way you get the benefits of the higher level package, but both ships.

    $110 meltdown refund
    $250 Rear Admiral
    $110 Hornet
    Total: $250

    $225 Constellation
    Total: $225

So really it depends if you think the extras in the package are worth $25.

I would have preferred a Digital Rear Admiral, but they don't do it. :(

i have no clue what's been said in the last 15 pages.

    Game looks good.
What can i get for £35 that doesn't put me at an immediate disadvantage for these pay to win $225 subscriber packages?
