Maybe the BBC are saying that Top Gear cannot exist without Clarkson so we are pulling the programs and if you want them back you must allow us to treat Clarkson differently from any other employee who threw a punch at a colleague and give him nothing more that a not to stern talking to and another final warning.

Lets be clear here, physical violence against another person is perfectly acceptable grounds for dismissal. Of course, there may be other factors involved which may cause the BBC to mete out some lesser punishment (which I think they will be inclined to do due to Clarkson's importance).

My big question is why on earth does that require them to cancel TG?

I think you will find that Clarkson could probably slap the Director General and get away with it.

I guess they feel that the program needs all three presenters for the studio bits, but I think they could just crack on with May and Hammond (and even rope in an extra punter if required). Alternatively, as a precursor to the General Election debates that might be going ahead without David Cameron, they could just "empty chair" Clarkson instead, which would be hilarious :D

You want Clarkson to go to court for hitting a co-worker?

The stupidity of a lot of all this is insane. The BBC are doing the right thing suspending a violent employee. If they don't want to fire him then they need to be seen to be making steps or the producer in question would be well within his rights to start employee tribunals for bullying in the workplace etc.

    QFT

Let me point out that I love Topgear, and generally side with Clarkson on his little outbursts, I think he's great, but if you hit a coworker its going to have fallout.

A normal person in a normal job would have heard the following: "P45 will be in the post, please don't make a scene while security escorts you from the building".

Just because he is rich and famous he should not get preferential treatment.

Simple really, the culture within the BBC, and the workplace in general has changed a great deal from those days. Equality and fair practices in the workplace actually means that now (not perfect yet, but working towards it).

Where in the old days high profile people could sweep lots under the carpet, now you are just asking for trouble if you try it. The Beeb must now be seen to be fair to all employees and subjects of news, just like any other business - doesn't really matter what happened in the past - it only shows they are making efforts to improve.

Yep, the Beeb will always be accused of bias, what matters is if they follow their own processes and standards, rather than bow to an uninformed lot who tick a box in an online form (or whatever style it was).

If they can adhere to their rules then there should be nothing coming back at them from either of the involved parties.

So who has signed the petition? Which I personally think is ridiculous.

Depresses me that the for and against petitions get much more support than actual world issues that really matter.

Probably be the end of top gear on bbc if he does get sacked does not mean it would be the end of top gear though. Sky or ITV would jump at the chance I'd think.

Clarkson part owns the show so unless bbc buy him out they have little choice that's why it was cancelled and the show is pre recorded all there big stuff is done months ahead of time. It's only the studio bits and stars in a reasonable priced car that is done a week ahead.

Clarkson sold his chunk for about 12million in 2012. not sure if he still has a share in it though.
